Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 17th September 2014]

This time last year I don't think you would have rested Sterling as he would've had a whole week off coming up.
Now you've got CL games midweek it's far harder to keep players fresh, that highlights the benefit you had last year which I think Man.U. will benefit from this year, unfortunately.

Where did I mention Sterling? This time last year had we had the injuries we had today we'd have fielded under 11's. The extra money CL football brings allows you to have a far bigger squad which far outweighs the advantage of fewer games. The fact that you almost never see a non-CL side challenge for the title proves that.

Today's result had nothing to do with Sterling. The 11 players picked were fine. The system they were picked to play in was the problem.

You didn't, I was just talking to you about Rodger's decision to rest him :)

Not far off it :p
He's got more in 4 games than Torres got all last season and if he scores 2 more this season he'll beat Torres's best season with us :o:p

I'm going to put my reputation on the line here and say.... I think Costa will do better this season than Torres's best season at Chelsea. :p

Genuinely wouldn't surprise me if Costa broke the scoring record this year with Fabregas to set him up, if both stay fit and Costa doesn't get himself some long ban for spitting in a refs face, there is a good chance.

Moving on to Fabregas, apparently Ozil was the assist king in europe, he managed 9 assists in 25 games last year. Fabregas... who according to Wenger we really don't need, has 6 assists after 4 games. :(

Ozil probably just passed the ball to old Ronny in midfield and he took on 5 defenders and scored.

Still an assist.

He also took a lot of corners/freekicks when Real are one of the two three genuinely great sides at set pieces. When you have 3-4 guys who are great in the air it becomes both so much more likely for you to score and so much harder for the opposition to mark you. Ramos, Pepe, Ronaldo is brilliant in the air as well.

he made some good assists, but Real also played mostly counter attack style football. When Ozil is allowed to stand around the half way line, they get the ball and Ronaldo/Di Maria burst 60-80 yards forward, a lot of the time Ozil is just kicking any old ball over the top for them to run on to. It certainly padded his stats and gives a false impression of how good he was.

The irksome thing is that every single weakness in his game, his laziness, his attitude, his pulling out of tackles, his literally kicking the ball away to avoid a tackle, his inability to work the wing well, that he becomes a fraction as good offensively when put under even minor pressure. These things were plain as day at Real and the reason the team were looking to offload him.

If he'd come here, failed to adapt and been a completely different player that is one thing and just bad luck, but he is exactly the player he was in Madrid, exactly. We paid 42million for exactly the performances we're getting today on average.

Man U are going to be looking ok after a win tomorrow. Granted they have a first 6 games that should have got them 6 wins but it will be impossible to lose to QPR.
