Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 17th September 2014]

We were awful, certainly didn't deserve to win regardless of red cards not being given.

Pretty predictable, awful from Brendan not starting Sterling

No different to the past 3 seasons against them other than the fact we conceded a soft goal as opposed to semi decent counter attacks
He started Gerrard in a two man midfield again and Villa just targeted him whenever he got the ball.

That and our abysmal record defending set pieces and he really needs to progress as a manager this season and learn from his mistakes for us to reach the next level imo.

We've done pretty well at Anfield in recent seasons, fancy a result today.

Your doing well run is over or better be even with no sturridge or sterling we should win this game

Nyuhhh :p

What a result, top of the table again. Going to enjoy it while it lasts :D

Still the only goal we've conceded was an unlucky OG this season. Senderos and Cissokho have been superb, as has bringing Hutton back in.

Oh, we're second. Damn you BBC not updating the table.

Atletico 0-1 up has cheared me a bit, just a bit.

Not guaranteeing anything but the Celta Sociedad game on after that one. Celta tended to be a bit of an all out attack team and sometimes very entertaining and Sociedad tend to be the same, hoping for an excellent game. The Sociedad Real Madrid game a couple weeks ago was freaking epic.

oooo, as I type Ronnie gets a penalty and scores it. 1-1, game on.

Don't really think it has much to do with targeting Gerrard in a two man midfield, certainly not today, he isn't going to stop them pressing him and he certainly wasn't the one struggling today.

I want to keep liking Sakho but he's disastrous.

No idea how we'd set up differently to beat them, we actually had decent chances that should've been finished but it felt like the worst performance in ages but 3 in a row Rodgers has struggling against them at home, needs to sort it out

I can't believe that Rodgers tried to play a 4-2-3-1 with Gerrard and Henderson again. Braindead decision of the highest order. It was the exact same game last season that he tried it and it went so badly wrong, only for us to change to a 4-3-3 and get back in the match.

The side didn't play well but the forward players weren't given a chance. If you're going to play that system you need to have at least 1 if not 2 controllers in midfield that provide the platform for you to play from, we didn't have that at all today. Villa just flooded the midfield and we couldn't get Lallana, Markovic or Coutinho into the game.

I don't understand Rodgers sometimes. He gets so much right but always has a game like today in him where he just has a brain fart.

The game last season highlighted the defensive issues with playing Gerrard and Henderson in midfield. Today highlighted the offensive issues with playing them together.

We had a lot of the ball and played a lot of passes without any control or idea what we're doing. Under Benitez we had Alonso and Mascherano backing up play, always giving attacking players an option if they needed to play the ball back to attack again and most importantly, picking up the lose balls and pinning the opposition back. Gerrard and Henderson can't do that. They both want to run forward and they vacate the midfield.

How many times did Lallana/Moreno down the left or Markovic/Manquillo down the right get the ball and have nobody infield to play a simple pass to? It happened time and time again and as a result they dwelt on the ball and our attacks were too slow to be effective.

The old man dragged me to St Mary's today, ok so Newcastle were crap but I was impressed at how well we played after the summer we've had with so many changes.

Also pleased with Schneiderlin and Cork adding goals to their game, hope the latter gets a new contract soon.

Rodriguez and Mane to come back too so this season could turn out much better than expected.

An awesome 2nd half performance by Chelsea today, Costa will get all the headlines but Hazard was just incredible.
First half we were dire and Swansea played some good stuff, that new big lad they have up front will batter some of the lesser defenders this season too.
Speaking of defence, worryingly we've let in 5 goals in our last 2 games and there's been some big gaps at times.
When we have to play against better defences we will need to be far more organised as not all teams will let us score 4+ goals.

Sterling...

This time last year I don't think you would have rested Sterling as he would've had a whole week off coming up.
Now you've got CL games midweek it's far harder to keep players fresh, that highlights the benefit you had last year which I think Man.U. will benefit from this year, unfortunately.
