Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16 - 17th March 2013]

It wasn't where he was from, it was who he played for. Semantics aside doing niggly challenges and being a PITA isn't the same as that.

No news yet.

I think originally he did go for the ball you can see him swinging for it, halfway through he seems to relaise he isn't getting it and changes from swinging for the ball to getting the man.

I would imagine he thought "you aren't getting the ball if I'm not so I'm taking you out." that's what it looks like to me though I would like to think that he wasn't wanting to hurt him, just stop him getting past him. Either way though it was abysmal.

No scapegoat for the performance, we were worth a point for the second half performance but in general it was a poor performance, very disjointed.

Simpson will be off with Tulisa, that or getting his face smashed in around Manchester again :p

He's had the odd Europa League game but he seems to want a stupid large pay rise as he's greedy (think we are offering him around 30-35k to make him among the pay of the non "star" players but he wants around 50k) so Cashley has no intention of keeping him.

I'm not sure how bad Debu's injury was iirc they

it's a stain not a tear. He's heading to france to link up with the national team but will prob be sent home.

Quite an eventful weekend! Just a pity Everton and Chelsea won. Am amazed Spurs lost at home to Fulham, with their run in they can't afford to drop points to teams like them. Liverpool have amused me although Southampton are no mugs at home. Good win away for the Arsenal, one of the tougher games remaining so 4th / 3rd is looking a lot more likely now.

I think that Wigan player should have been sent off but it was definitely not malicious, you can see he was trying to clear it down the line and completely misjudged it.

It was a 50/50 ball there to be won, and to be fair, McManaman did actually get to the ball first, it was just a bit of an unfortunate one for Haidara because of how he had his leg planted. You see tackles like that in pretty much every game in the prem, and normally the player just gets a yellow for it. The only difference with this one is that an unfortunate injury was caused.

Getting the ball first has nothing to do with it. It was a dangerous and wreck less challenge any day of the week. Should receive a ban. I kind of want Wigan to go down now after what Martinez said.

And no, you don't see tackles like that in every premier league game.

He left the ground with both feet and studs at knee level..... And no he did not get to the ball first.

Don't know how anyone can defend that tackle

Are you for real? This doesn't happen every week in the prem, and he came nowhere near the ball!! I'm not sure what the kid thought he would achieve from a knee high lunge with studs showing...

My problem with this is the retrospective punishment McManaman will receive. He should be banned for 3 games, which will be of no benefit to Newcastle. The rules need to be changed, and the referee must be allowed to review video evidence if not immediately but at half time at least. Wigan should have been down to 10 men for the second half, and Newcastle should have got 3 points (I know it all ifs and buts)...

You've clearly not watched all of the the replay angles, because McManaman definitely 100% gets to the ball first. These challenges do happen in pretty much every game, but most of the time the contact is pretty minimal so the player just gets a yellow card and nobody bats an eyelid. The only difference is that Haidara's leg was in an unfortunate position this time and he was injured.

Have we heard how bad the injury is yet?

Not that it makes any difference to me but he does touch the ball before he gets the man.

It was still over his knee and still should have been a red.

I'm not saying that it wasn't a red, or that he doesn't deserve to be punished retrospectively. It was a horrible tackle.

What I am saying is that it was a 50/50 ball and that McManaman got to the ball first. I don't think that he's a dirty player or that there was any intent to hurt Haidara.

The two statements aren't mutually exclusive.

Some people are being a bit deluded. Ironically if both players had gone in studs up they probably would have both come out of it ok. Hopefully the injury is a minor one.

Ultimately though what do we want from our game? Should we turn it more and more into a non-contact sport because of tackles like this?

Just as a reference point the Pienaar tackle that he was sent off for wasn't too dissimilar and as far as I'm aware that was only a yellow card (albeit a second one meaning he was sent him off).

Educate these players to know they can't leave the ground with their studs showing going for knee caps...

No-one is saying stop football from being a contact sports, but there is challenging fairly, then there is just plain stupidity.

Simples?

I remember the uproar when Tiote got sent off earlier in the season for a studs up knee high challenge...

Are you referring to the one against Sunderland? His studs were not up, and it was nowhere near the knee. In fact it was the Sunderland players fault for pulling back on Tiote which made his body weight drop back and lift his leg...

Why are people still trying to justify McManamans challenge?

No one is saying it wasn't a red card, just that it wasn't intentional. It's quite clear he was trying to knock the ball up the wing and just got it wrong, it wasn't malicious.

Except for this guy, who thinks it's a normal challenge and a yellow might have done...
