Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16 - 21st August 2013]

Arsenal looked like a team who hadn't done an extensive pre-season. I dont blame the fans because they deserve some big names and not the usual tripe like rosicky who couldnt even get the everton line up

Bah, we're gonna lose this first one, I can feel it in me boons :/

Tough start for Moyes over these next few weeks.

So was it case of villa played well or did arsenal just fall to pieces?

Bit of both. They countered well. Converted their chances. Arsenal were a shambles at the back and lacked any real penetration going forward. Healthy dose of terrible refereeing, almost Phil Dowd at Arsenal levels of terrible.

Could be argued both ways really. Arsenal didn't look great defensively and Villa's players were full of energy and played on the break. A couple of great Guzan saves kept the scores even and a terrible decision from the ref later meant Arsenal had to push forward and were left completely exposed at the back. Arsenal were decent enough going forward but the shots were usually too tame or too wild.

EDIT: The only thing people should actually be disappointed about is that fact that Januzaj, who's probably looked our best player, hasn't made the bench at the expense of Rooney.

That's probably throwing him in at the deep-end as well , although I can see where you are coming from (he has been excellent)

At the end of the day Rooney (at the very least) has to be on the bench whether Utd keep him or not (to "prove" he is a vital part of the squad, and get the best price for him if he does go), or to give him match minutes as early as possible if he is staying.... and seeing the travelling reaction if /when he comes on

Fancy Swansea for the second upset of the day.

Wouldn't be that much of an upset to be fair

Which is why I can understand why he hasn't done it. Swansea away on the first day of the season isn't an easy game - he's going to want experience, a calm head and someone to keep the ship steady and have experienced it before.

It's not a surprise and I have faith if Young, Kagawa or Nani was fit then we would have seen them instead.

They haven't even bloody finished the match yet?:confused:?

Pre-season and charity shield. Nothing has changed, uninspiring and completely devoid of progression.

Kagawa as explained several times has had barely any pre season, hasn't looked fit and has played poor. Coupled with him flying half way across the globe this week to play a meaningless friendly.

It's not a surprise that he doesn't start, he needs time to get up to speed.

Valencia or Zaha could have gone either way but I'd imagine Moyes wants some experience and break Zaha in from the bench rather than throw him in at the deep end away against Swansea on the opening game of the season.

Plus, I don't know what people expect. It's not like there's going to be a revelation of system, line up or football in a month and a half is it. He's barely got his feet in the ****ing door people, jesus.

We're going into a run of tough games having not played our best creative midfielder for a significant period of minutes. this was the best possible time.

Stop resting on this crap about little pre-season, and travelling, he's not flying with the chickens in the cargo hold. He hasn't been running business meetings whilst on the plane and 22 hour work days when off.

We're not going to develop chemistry between our best eleven if they don't play together competitively.

We're going to be obliterated by the best teams in terms of style and possession, maybe not in scoreline, but we're not going to be controlling and running games like Man Utd should be.

Fancy Swansea for the second upset of the day.

There will be no upset if that happened, they were better than United in the same fixture last season, since then United have replaced an admittedly fading manager with an average one and not made any signings of note.

It will be more surprising if United get a result than the other way round.

sorry - misread your comment.

Personally Im not convinced Nani (in current form) is any better than anyone on the field anyway. On his day he could be, but that day is getting harder to remember. Kagawa is the biggest miss imo , but again as you mentioned - totally understandable

Travelling to western Europe, you might have a point. Kagawa has gone home to Japan (how ever many 1000's of miles that is *2) inside a week. Most people get a feeling of jetlag, and doing twice in quick succession (even though the effect is only one way, the length of the flight etc will also be tiring) and they are sportsmen who need to be in PEAK performance to paly at this level. Yes it does have a detrimental and noticeable effect.
but we're not going to be controlling and running games like Man Utd should be.

to be fair Utd haven't done this consistently for YEARS so don't whinge about it in Moyes' first game

Laudrup also showing some conservatism, picking Canas AND Britton in midfield [which strikes me as a gamble, as they haven't played together yet], and leaving Bony on the bench - possibly because he's only just jetted back from a Thursday international in the States, or possibly as a fearsome impact sub option.
