Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16 - 21st August 2013]

Didn't think Villas second penalty should have been, and the second yellow for Kos was mega harsh as well.

Arsenal played like complete Arse though.

Well Shearer said it was a penalty so nerrr :p.

I do think it was a second yellow though. Weimann literally had to dive out of the way of a studs up challenge.

Yeah, the second yellow looked not so bad from a distance but you have to remember that a yellow card isn't a flat out yellow card. Sometimes a ref gives a yellow but a tackle was very close to a red so he'll give a second yellow for something minor. Other times a ref will give a yellow for something pretty minor and then let a couple more tackles go by without punishment. In Kos's case from the ref's view point Kos tackled a player that did him, from behind, caught the player and not the ball and the ball was heading closer to the goal than when Gabby kicked it away from goal for the Chesny penalty. In other words Kos was lucky not to get a straight red, was walking the tightrope and did something very stupid.

Chesny could and probably should have gone as well.

As for Welbeck... Walcott IS awful, and every time I bad mouth him(fairly) he ruddy scores..... the less you say about Welbeck the worse he'll be, the more you vent how much you hate him, the more he'll score, every team has a player that can be "Pigeoned" , and its usually the player who is most frustrating, most overpaid and the one you want to talk about how crap he is the most.... because its the most irritating when they go and score.

:p

Well Shearer doesn't know what he's talking about! :P

Normally I'd agree it's a booking, the decisions just seemed very inconsistent. Anyway, this is looking like I'm trying to make excuses, when I'm not. Arsenal played poor, Villa played really well and definitely deserved their win.

Liverpool look extremely good and they don't even have Suarez on the pitch.
We looked just as good in the final few games last season although that's more to do with the players adapting to the way Rodgers likes to play football than Suarez being out.

Downside of playing this way will be highlighted against counter attacking teams like Villa who have the players and pace to test our high line and hurt us.

Aspas looks like what Borini should have been?

Not sure that's fair. Aspas is effectively Suarez lite where as Borini's meant to be an Inzaghi type forward that's been asked to play as a wide forward.

I'm not too sure what the thinking was behind signing Borini. Assuming that Rodgers always intended to play Suarez central then Borini was signed firstly to play wide and secondly as cover for Suarez - in which case I can't help but think we'd have been better off signing a more natural wide player that could do a job centrally rather than the other way around.

With our signings since January and the development of Sterling & Ibe, Borini's now 4th choice striker and way down the pecking order in terms of wide players. He's not a bad squad player to have but looking back that £9-10m could have been spent better.

If we can keep the ball better and Lucas getting back to his best, we should cope better. I'd still love Mascerhano and a young, fast Samii Hyypia though.
