Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 20th August 2014]-LvGOUT!

And how many times have utd said that or something similar in last few years then spent very little, every one says utd are wealthy they maybe but for all utd fans know the income they get is paying there debt which there is allot of, the players utd want may want cl which they don't have

No, the debt isn't the problem. It's covered and we earn a massive amount more than the debt costs to service.

We've got money, maybe the Glazers aren't keen on us spending it, or want to use it for other things, but it is there.

Fact is, if we don't buy some ready made quality, top four is a huge ask and will be dictated entirely by our injuries and opponents form (former of which have been really bad so far).

I've been saying all along this is the most important transfer window for us in recent history - we've got a fine manager who is more than capable of building us a great team for years to come, but he's not a miracle worker. Having to resort to Darren Fletcher as our best midfield option alongside Herrera is simply embarrassing. The guy has been ill, which is a shame, but he's lost it.

A very busy two weeks are ahead, or we're in serious trouble. Admittedly we were missing some important players today, but we do have a lot of injury prone players.

... yes?

The United board have said that Van Gaal "can break the world transfer record for the right player", and that £200m is available for transfers.

He only said that because they can no longer attract the best players in the world.

Spend £200m on players after the season starts is not a good idea. I doubt they could find three or four players worth £50m to join them.

Be an interesting season for them.

If it comes down to crunch time for Utd I reckon Wenger would probably consider a 20-25million bid for Diaby

I'm not going to get into an argument about technicalities, but the original comment was:

I doubt United can pay 50m for one single player and give him over 200k?

Which is clearly a point about money and not about attracting talent.

We don't even need the very best players, just some good ones with a lot of potential would be a start.

Agreed. Rebuild get some young promising talent in and add a few experienced guys. With a good manager they should be in with a shot. Although it is never good to lose on opening game, might spur him into some business.
