Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 22nd August 2011]

I wasn't too impressed with Clayton when we first had him, he's looked awesome this season.

I have to hold my hands up as someone who, at the start of this season thought to myself "oh god, he was utter **** last season, why are we playing him"....certainly ate those words in the past few games, he's given 110% at every oppurtunity.

I think we just need cover for the LB/RB positions and someone as cover for the CB positions, then if we can keep on playing like we have today we should be a shoe in for playoffs or better.

Now I usually don't pay any attention to Graham Poll nor do I read the Daily Mail however somebody just tweeted this link which made interesting reading. Poll claims that despite being marginally ahead of play, Suarez wasn't offside for Liverpool's first goal on Saturday as he didn't touch the ball.

Poll says that the International Football Association Board decided a few seasons back that a player is only interfering with play if he actually touches the ball.

I've never heard that before and I'm not sure whether it's correct but if it is, it makes the offside rule even more ridiculous.

Well, that changes things.

Not really, it's the same back 4 that played the second half against City and the same one that ended the game against West Brom

firstly non competitve game - and 2ndly I dont believe Fabio was amongst teh subs for teh Community shield (if I remember correctly that is - he was at the match though. I seem to recall him being fully dressed next to Giggs)

and 15 minutes to go against West Brom is one thing (the point at which Rio left the field) - but surely 90 mins against Spurs (even at OT) is completely different kettle of fish altogether

Must be going crazy because I read that page Fri before lunch and I could have sworn it didnt name Evans specifically at that point.....oh well, still stand by the above

You actually agree with something Poll says, is this a first, ....or just because its "pro" Liverpool this time!!

Im sure that rule was used numerous times last season to discount goals - so its very interesting IF this is the case thats its only just coming up now

I posted it here as well:

"The team on Monday will be a very young defensive line-up, with Jones and Evans in the centre and Smalling at right-back," revealed the manager. "But Patrice Evra will be back for Spurs, which gives us experience.

fair enough - would still choose two strong centre-halfs though esp infront of De Gea, and while Evans has done ok so far - I would put Fabio to contend with Bale's pace and Smalling /Jones in the middle :)

Where did I agree with anything Poll said? I brought up an interesting point he made regarding the rules of the game and actually said that if it's true then it's ridiculous.

Reading isn't your strong point is it Frank?

lol, Rafael especially and Fabio to a lesser degree consistantly give away fouls and lunge in on fast guys like Bale as they go past them, and tend to get caught up field a lot aswell. They are exactly who you WOULDN'T want playing against Bale. Spurs don't really have anyone good upfront at the moment, and with the main threat coming from two fast wingers and a pair of twins who get themselves into trouble frequently against those types of players...... I know who I wouldn't play up against Bale.

Well regardless of how highly you place the experiance tonights back 4 has as a unit thus far they've still played as that unit more than the one you're suggesting so again it makes total sense us lining up like that. Also regardless of the Community Shield being a gloried friendly it was still against a very good side and given the tackles I find it hard to agree that it wasn't a competitive game.

The last two times Spurs have came to OT we've won 3-1 and 2-0 and Rafael has had Bale in his pocket both times (as Shami said)

Who kept 'best player in the world' Bale completely quiet last time again?

0-0 last year, Rafael got sent off, against Spurs.

Jesus, people really do like to argue stupid points, I noticed both of you didn't actually disagree with the premise, that Rafael has a tendancy to get into trouble defensively and lunge in and get bookings, you just decided to argue that it didn't happen twice before. Big whoop, Tiote tends to get booked a lot, but a Newcastle fan could list two games he didn't........ proves nothing, the premise is still the same and Rafael/Fabio tend to get caught out and then commit to rash challenges.

I didn't say he couldn't defend, when he can stop himself going too far forwards too often he doesn't seem to bad, not brilliant either.

I also in no way rate Bale as the best player in the world, not even close. But everyone has a bad game, almost as bad as Valencia is brilliant because he made Ashley Cole go to sleep crying one time.

Every player has good and bad games, I'll drop back to my usual go to, Cygan, bombing up the left wing, and getting a brace...... if I argue in the same way, that proves Cygan is the bestest left back in the world and can do that against anyone any time. No, sometimes everything goes for you, sometimes everything goes against you, its your form/consistancy over many games that determines how good a player is, as such Rafael and Fabio aren't always the best option against uber fast wingers + attacking fullback who get at them, just because they didn't get sent off twice, doesn't mean they aren't vunerable against those types of players.

To be fair, he hasn't actually been booked that many times, though he should have been, he's very quick to lunge in when he thinks he's been caught out.

Smalling will be playing for his height. The twins are like glass as well so I suspect we will be keeping Fabio safe for a bit due to our injuries at the moment. The back four was confirmed in the press conference.

Man I miss rafael.

rafael had bale in his back pocket? i must've been watching a different game. the game i watched, rafael had a look of fear on his face and had to keep being assisted by someone else until he headed for the tunnel

CCCCCCOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYSSSSSSSSS

I'm pretty sure Fabio has been sent off once - vs Wolves iirc, and Rafael has been sent off twice - Bayern & the second booking vs Spurs.

They are far less lungy than when they were first in the side.

Lets also not forget that they don't play as much as people think, not anywhere near, so their experience is little. (Smalling played nearly more in his 1 year than Fabio has in his four for example, and has only played 1 less league game than Fabio overall in 1 year)

Rafael should have been sent off at least once (2 footed lunge on Lucas at Anfield) against Liverpool last season, if not twice (the 2 footed tackle on Meireles in the FA Cup).

do i any spur fans have any strange feelings towards the woodgate scenario? constantly injured for us the past 2 years but now on the starting sheet for stoke? gutted we find ourselves in a position where we really need him now!
