I see we've reached the Rooney is average part of the banality.

Anyone that says drop Rooney frankly should just stay quiet as you clearly know nothing at all about football.

Unfortunately any sense that DM talks is offset by this list he has of players he loves no matter what, and hates no matter what. There is no middle ground! :p

DM absolutely hates Rooney and likes to slate him, you won't change his mind. Thankfully most people will agree he's a quality player, one of the best.

My only concern with Rooney is that he doesn't look sharp or particularly fit at the moment, a problem we've had before.

I don't know if DM intends to be rude or not, but his posts certainly read as if he's 'shouting' and being very aggressive, as well as the extremely condescending tone they often contain.

I think I pointed this out before.

As I've said before, Rooney has become very inconsistent lately, and seems to have some fitness issues. He doesn't look the same player that he was, even last season he wasn't particularly great.

That depends on the defensive midfielder you're talking about though, they aren't all good in the air.

I think Phil Jones could have helped stop him, he's a fairly big lad. Someone like Khedira would be ideal.

He's still good in the air and quite powerful, it's not purely about height. Either way he may not be much good in midfield so it's just guesswork.

Unlucky Reading.

Chelsea far from their best (I assume they'll improve quite a lot more) but I felt Reading deserved at least a point. They didn't deserve to lose to an offside goal.

Torres is a hard player to work out, he shows a few flashes of brilliance but still doesn't look himself. I wonder if Chelsea will buy Cavani, it might not be a bad idea.

Good analysis of our tactics vs Everton here: http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/08/21/ferguson-showcases-a-4-2-1-3-against-everton/

Key point:

The system broke down in the penalty box largely because of a particularly poor display from Rooney, who didn’t look 100% fit and didn’t offer anything like the movement required for a lone striker. Kagawa’s performance was encouraging, but often he looked up and Rooney wasn’t in a position to receive a clever pass. Sometimes he came towards play to get the ball, but there was rarely a reverse run into a striking position, and United ended up playing in front of Everton.

I think we'll see Rooney in Welbeck's position and RvP as the lone striker, he plays that role well.
