Okay on what premise are we better with him in midfield? Indulge me.
By the same logic, someone can play 4 games, have a shocker and it brings their average down and doesn't give them a chance to recover.
There is no reason to suggest that playing more games should result in a lower average. Playing 14 games does not implicitly result in a lower average than playing 4 games, although clearly you'd want a bigger sample to improve accuracy. But even taking the small sample size into account (i.e. more risk of variance), it's just as likely to be higher rather than lower.
he's 3rd choice? he's better than ferdinand and probably smalling too (though i am assuming smalling is a cb and has only played rb due to cover) imo. who would be second choice, evans? vidic is number 1 but for how much longer?

Vidic and rio are no 1 and number 2. Jones would be the first replacement (imo) after those two. Thus making him number 3. Except because he gets drafted elsewhere that provides Jon Evans with more opportunity to ply his trade.
ah my bad. i was assuming the phrase was meant in the context of vidic and rio being obvious 1 and 2 so got a little ahead of myself. i still think he's better than rio though.

He might well be, but so seldom have i seen Jones at center back i honestly couldn't say. If we had a fully fit squad and faced bayern tomorrow id put money on fergie picking Rio ahead of Jones.
I think most people would, seeing as Rio has a lot more experience, and obviously Vidic would partner him, makes sense. Who would your other 2 defenders be, prey tell, because I damn sure wouldn't want Rafael/Fabio/Evans/Evra facing Bayern. Genuine question by the way, i'm stumped as well.

Its a tough question for sure.
I mean, id like to say Fabio and Evra at RB and LB...However, we know how the game went down last time we played Bayern, they 'out qualitied' us in the wing department and got Rafael sent off...
