Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 22nd January 2019]

4-3, got the points, but by god that was nervy. 3 goals conceded for the first time this season really highlights how the defensive injuries have affected us.

Looks worrying at first glance the score line but considering injuries, 10 men at the end and a team that put 3 past City, it’s not too shocking.

Not shocked by it, Palace have a habit of being a thorn in our sides but I dont think for a moment that they would put 3 past us with our proper back line.

I'm sure TAA would've dealt with Zaha better than Milner did but our entire defence was all over the shop in terms of positioning today. Not a surprise when two of our regular defenders were out, Matip was just back from injury and we played a high line against their pace.

Glad to have the training camp and a few days off now, get some players back and recharge the batteries for the games ahead.

Wijnaldum was the bigger loss today. We really lacked control of the game today and that's something Wijnaldum gives us both in keeping possession but also winning it back. We're going to need both him and Trent back for Leicester now because if Fabinho has tweaked a muscle he's going to be out for at least a couple of weeks.

Importantly, thats yet another example of a game that in previous years we would have drawn. Klopp wanted his players to believe and maybe they are now showing that they are believing.

Who do Leicester play down that side? Milner was rinsed but it was Zaha who is a very very good player.
I can't think of anybody that plays there particularly for them - it changes from game to game. The issue wasn't Zaha in isolation but the way Palace play and our performance today. Palace set up with almost everybody behind the ball and then had 3 runners looking to break on us if we gave the ball away, which we done too often. Throw in the fact that we set-up with our 2 least mobile midfielders meant we were always going to be vulnerable to counter attacks.

Obviously having Trent would have helped but so too would have having Wijnaldum in midfield, both in terms of keeping the ball better and his ability to snuff out counter-attacks. In hindsight we may have been better off today with Fabinho at RB and Milner in midfield as part of a 4-3-3 as Milner in that role is very good at protecting/covering his fullback.

Palace of recent years remind me of the struggles we had against Villa for a few years, annoying considering other teams cope with them so easily but it's a byproduct of our style I suppose.

Edit: Just looked at the table, United are really back in the top 4 fight now aren't they and you wouldn't bet against them given the momentum they have.

Agreed, but much better with Fabinho as the main man in the middle. +Hendo doesn't quite do what Wij does in defence imo
Both look better with Wijnaldum alongside them. He's our main man in midfield. To think most thought we were signing another creative attacker when he arrived and he's turned into an outstanding all round mifielder.

I did, memories of that game at Anfield(think it was Anfield) where he was a box to box player who caused us problems all day, wanted to sign him ever since.

I thought it was a dumb signing and thought I was kinda right for a while but yeah he is our best/second best overall in midfield.
