He should have sent him off for the previous foul then. Just getting fed up with a player and giving him a card for anything is pathetic refereeing but given his other decisions in the match not surprising.
Edit: Regarding yellow card magnet, I thought it was harsh but most commentators and pundits appear to think it was a red, including Shearer who didn't even question it, and they know far better than us.
It was a foul, it was a tame foul, but he was standing behind someone running, he didn't have to be standing behind someone running, and he made no adjustment for the fact that when he kicks the ball the guy infront will have his leg further back. It could have been more blatant, but he DID catch his leg, however minor. He was told not very long before that one more anything and you're off. The only person who screwed up, well two, were Pienaar and Moyes, it was OBVIOUSLY coming and both walked into it.
But the main part is in bold, utter tripe, complete rubbish. Being a footballer does not in any way automatically make your opinion more valid. THis is fairly obvious from the sheer quantity of things they get wrong about literally every game they talk about, Shearer being one of the worst.
Do you think if Rooney, or Gerrard, Terry, basically any English player did it they'd have said the same? I'm not saying racism, just, they play "to the crowd" when will people learn this about pundits. A certain annoymous footballer who has a book tells you as much and has worked as a pundit. They tell a story, they have a job to do, they want a villian, and a good guy, an underdog and a champion. On top of that, how much do you think the FA likes it when the teams of guys they let win the contracts bash the referee's constantly?
Tiote's wasn't a red at all, it was stupid but barely contact, not out of control tackle not helped at all by a playing feigning injury, again if that was Rooney and say Ronaldo had gone down the reaction of pundits and fans would be screaming at the playing making a meal of it.
Pienaar's wasn't a yellow for that foul alone, it was for multiple fouls and it was deserved, simple as that.
