Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [19th - 22nd November 2011]

Just remembered that we used to have a shocking record at Stamford Bridge (1 win in god knows how many years) but we've now won 3 in the last 4

roman is not happy, regardless of chelsea calling the rumours 'nonsense' about him and boas. torres was essentially a roman buy but it looks to be a poor move, money that could have been much well better spent. they need modric but why would modric want to go right now? roman's going to have to dig deep to persuade spurs and him but right now, i reckon he'd rather be at spurs.

When they bought Torres the rumour was the Ancellotti wanted Aguero instead! This makes sense as he was linked often in the papers with a move. AVB will probably go the way of scolari if he doesn't start getting PL wins. Roman could subsidise a season without CL but players that chelsea need to strengthen would not sign without CL.

Essien's been useless ever since his first season though. He's quite possibly the most overrated player of all time.

IMO he's not even the most overrated midfielder to play under Mourinho at Chelsea :)
Trouble is it is very hard to judge 'overratedness' because even player if ability was a known quantity, we'd still need to know exactly how highly everyone rates every player, which we don't.

£80m for Torres and Shevchenko, both players seemingly chosen by the owner (his perogative of course, but it does undermine the manager somewhat, and neither have performed up to standard at Chelsea).

Just seen Blackburns second goal, how was that allowed to stand? We did that a few years back against Chelsea and did it properly and it wasn't given, terrible piece of officiating

Didn't see it but was it the one where you took the corner chelsea didn't realise, giggs just took the ball ran and crossed it to Ronaldo and scored?

EDIT: if so what did blackburn do wrong :p

Yeah don't understand the Adam bashing, he was fairly good today.

As i said before the game, when we play compact in a 4-2-3-1 rather the way we've been playing usually (especially at home), Adam's failures are well masked and he actually contributes well and offers something to the team.

Well the problem was that the first guy (Yakubu) taking the corner didn't actually touch the ball. The ref even turned his back after Yakubu moved away, which would clearly indicate that he thought it was still to take. And yet, when the only player near the ball (Pedersen) came haring past him, with no way anyone else could have touched it, he let it go. Bizarre.

That is quite a statement to make seeing as how City bought up half the best players in the world who were available, without champions league on offer.

People make a big song and dance about the champions league, but the prem league is FAR harder to win over 38 games than the champs league is, likewise the worst teams in the champs league and usually at least one team in each group is noticeably worse than the worst premier league teams.

As a footballer I would really have no problem going to a club that wasn't in the champions league, especially as they could double Modric's wage and are more likely to be in the champions league in the next decade than Spurs are.

As for subsidising without the champs league, he already does that with the champs league anyway, he probably makes profits a dozen, maybe dozens of times higher than the losses he takes at Chelsea.

The one thing is though, its very easy for managers to blame a team starting to fail on an owner. Torres was rated as the best striker in the league by the majority in here, Schevy was a world class striker when they bought him. The fact both have failed aren't actually Roman's fault, Torres could have come in and scored 30 a year, most people thought he would. You can't always tell how a player will adapt and it wasn't completely obvious that Torres's lack of form was, seemingly permanent rather than temporary.

How many crap strikers did Mourinho buy, and right backs, and central midfielders, before Roman got bored and wanted to buy what a LOT of people rated as one of the best strikers around in the champs league at the time?

Mourinho sold Robben and a few really quality players and a LOT of his buys were worthless crap that was costing Roman hundreds of millions, with Mourinho it was really how he refused to use players or give them a chance, then would get rid of them for nothing while demanding more money to replace them.

if I was the owner of Chelsea with Mourinho in charge I would have taken control of buying as well. The core of the team was there before Mourinho was, except Robben/Cech who Ranieri bought before he was fired.
