Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1st - 2nd September 2012]

A good away win. New players starting to gel and a solid defence.

3 clean sheets at the start of season for the first time in 88 years i think they said on sky.

I'm not sure if our lack of goals or recovery when we give away is the most worrying. It was always going to take time to adapt to how Rodgers wants to play but every time we give the ball away, we look wide open.

We should have had a pen when Mertesacker (and a subsequent 2nd yellow for him) pulled Suarez down but our general play wasn't good enough; as Arsenal have shown us for the past 6 years, you can play as much pretty football as you like but it's meaningless if you don't win anything.
We had more than enough midfielders and created more than enough chances last season. We needed a goalscorer first and foremost and we failed epically. No good having a player like Allen if there's no one to get on the end of his passes.

We needed a goalscorer but we needed Allen or an Allen type player equally as much. He's pivotal to how Rodgers wants to play. It shouldn't be the case (and wasn't) that it's one or the other. We some how managed to **** things up yesterday and sign nobody when we expected to sign 2 attackers.
Shelvey's been much better than Gerrard in the advanced position. Wouldn't mind seeing him start ahead of Allen and Sahin in midfield with Gerrard on the right in our next game.

Definitely this. Gerrard's not best suited to playing in a midfield 3 like this and hopefully with him pushed forward, we'll have another attacking threat.

Arsenal defensive improvement in first three games has been crazy to see. So organised today, Cazorla and Podolski working their butts off in defence.

Also, the butthurt from some Liverpool fans in this thread is pretty funny :p. Liverpool look really good, but look like they need a bit more time. Joe Allen played like Xavi, what a signing.

Seriously though, our toothlessness in front of goal is a serious problem. Teams don't fear playing us at all because they know we won't score.
We'r a slow side to boot giving teams ample time to get behind the ball.
Frankly, at this current stage it feels like we are minimum 200-300 million away from challenging for 4th place let alone higher.
Gerrard looks past it for me, has put in not even a handful of good performances since 2008/9.
Reina looks shot of motivation and wanting away.
Back four shaky, Enrique becoming a massive problem as he was the back end of last season and no one to challenge/replace him.
Midfield on paper looks better but there's no physical bite about it so just gets bossed around. This should be Gerrard's job i guess? shame he's been completely useless.
Upfront we can't score for **** - too much pressure on a 21 and 17 year old to contribute with literally no-one to replace them with.

Well that was one-sided. The only thing that surprised me was the shots statistic for Liverpool. Prior to Shelvey coming on I don't remember them testing Mannone. Arsenal looked decent, the most impressive thing is their defensive solidity compared to last year. Steve Bould has obviously had a positive impact on them.

edit: can only imagine De Gea is injured, otherwise wtf is Fergie doing leaving him out? He's made some great saves so far this season, we probably will have drawn with Fulham if it weren't for De Gea so I hope it's a small knock and not Fergie madness. Oh and it also ***** up my ff team lol.

You're not Ian Ayre are you? That's the kind of comment I'd expect from him and the reason we probably didn't sign anyone :p

It's not a defense of failing to sign a striker but it's wrong to say that we should have signed a striker instead of Allen. We should have signed both.

Robinson's the answer but I doubt Rodgers wants to play two young players on the same side. Probably why he tried Downing there against Hearts.

You missed the word I highlighted, windows shut two days ago :p

Watching the game, first half Diabi realy did stand out. Clinical reading the play, for me without his efforts, liverpool would have come at arsenals back line a heck of a lot more.

Enjoyable game all the same. Reguardless of where you think liverpool are at, there's never a lack of wanting to punch the ball through when playing at home.

Win or lose, great viewing for a neutral.

Fox against Valencia is not good news for Saints, Left Back position should have been strengthened in the transfer window.
Glad Guly isn't playing. If he's guilty of his drink driving charges then hopefully he'll never play for us again.
Still lacking pace up front with our first XI today, had hoped for Mayuka to start but maybe it's too early for him.
