Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [20th - 21st September 2014]

I imagine too that this is Gerrards final season.

Depends where we finish, if its top 4 I reckon he'll stay on (or if we somehow win the CL). The midfield set up needs adjusted though, wish he'd play further forward, still probably the best finisher on our team if he actually got the ball in the box

Do you only watch when you're winning or something?

Nope.
But after the Fulham game I wanted Moyes gone and I knew that we are just going to get worse...and thats exactly what happened. I didnt want to see Moyes' Man Utd. He was terrible.

It's baffling. 34 years of age and he's played 270 minutes of football in a week.

I questioned whether Gerrard had something in his contract that states he has to play when he's fit last season and I'm questioning it again now. The only other option is Rodgers is scared to drop him and that doesn't bode well for anyone.

What makes it worse is Henderson is now just a pair of legs for Gerrard and he's gone off the boil completely as a result.

Last season our attacking play covered over a lot of Stevie's deficiencies, our attacking play has gone to **** so far this season (where's the pace, the counter attacking play?) and u can see just how little he contributes outside if the odd pen and free kick. I just can't see how it improves without dropping people.

We've not faced any particularly good teams yet, but I do think we'd have fared a lot better if we didn't have all these injuries.

Going to be a very interesting season. I do think Chelsea are pretty much nailed on for the league though. City will most likely get second and then 3rd and 4th are a bit of a toss up... I think we can potentially get 3rd if our defence can at least become decent.

Completely agree with this, though after tomorrow I think things will be a lot clearer. Tomorrow's game against Leicester will give us United fans an idea of whether things really are starting to improve, or whether it was just QPR being shockingly bad last week. The Chelsea vs City game should also give us a much better idea of who is favourite for the league.

Oh and what on earth has happened to Liverpool this season? I know losing a player of Suarez's quality is going to badly effect any team, and it's made worse at the moment having Sturridge injured, but other than Sterling they look completely devoid of any pace, and due to that they've lost that devastating counter-attacking ability.

If he's going to play further forward we'll need to ditch counter attacking football and go back to the passing football Rodgers originally had us playing at the beginning. That would get the best out of some players, including Gerrard, but would make others like Moreno, Sturridge and Sterling far less effective.

You've still got to watch your team when you can no matter how bad they are playing :/

30 mins vs City and the Spurs game apart, we've been dreadful every game this season.

I just don't know what Rodgers is thinking with his tactics in the opening weeks. We fell upon a system last season with Gerrard sitting in front of the back line, two players with lots of energy just ahead of him and then a front three that varies between two up top with one in behind or one up top and two wide. Only twice have we started like that this season and coincidently they were the two games we've performed in.

If playing Gerrard and Henderson in a two last week wasn't bad enough, trying to play a 3 man midfield with two players that have no legs (especially when you acknowledged it couldn't work last season) today was madness. West Ham were all over our midfield and first to every ball and 2nd ball, keeping us pinned back all first half. It was only in the 2nd half when they tired/began to sit back and protect their lead that we were able to get out of our half for a prolonged period.

Young Barry who is Vice Captain ? Certainly looks like a lack of leadership at the back at times

Henderson. And it's nothing to do with leadership.

We simply couldn't get out of our half. Everybody knows how a Fat Sam team will play, they got the ball forward quickly and won absolutely every 2nd ball. Gerrard and Lucas just don't have the legs any more and to play them both was so obviously wrong. The defence made mistakes but when you're continuously on the back foot and are trying to defend against 2 physical forwards, plus having to also cope with West Ham's midfield running on to you, there's only going to be one end result.

You can have the smallest amount of sympathy for Rodgers with Allen, Can and Coutinho being out but Lallana was there and should have started.
