Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [20th - 25th January 2017]

10 days left of the transfer window and we need a new CB to play alongside Matip and a goal scoring winger. Klopp needs to admit his team is short of the quality we need and the owners need to back him.

Our down turn in fortune would still be hall of fame worthy if it were them :D

We should be picking the phone up tonight and phoning Southampton and saying £50m, cash, right now for Van Dijk.

Its about time Liverpool grew up. If we want to be a big team then we need to start bidding like a big team and stop trying to win things by saving pennies. Arsenal try that and look at what thats gained them. Open the purse strings, splash the cash, if we overpay who the hell gives a damn if it means that we get the players needed to win titles.

Was Klopp resorting to long ball after slating Mourinho for it?

God forbid:D

A specialty for Liverpool fans.

Hahaha

The problem with that is that the club starts overpaying for everyone , and you throw away the cost of A N Other player on 3 or so deals over one window. Even then its a gamble even with the right type of person not acclimatising to the pressure of Anfield / EPL etc (of course this is true with every deal not done between EPL clubs, but exaggerated the more the club overpay for x player because it just makes it harder to get rid of them without writing off huge amounts)

The same Sakho that was part of our defense the previous 3 seasons, where we were even worse?

I'm not sure you were even worse, you've changed managers in that time, i've always seen Sakho who defends 1st then thinks about the other stuff, i think you lack a bit of that at times in that defence.

Excluding matip we just lack defence full stop, this point I question the defensive coach's or back ground staff in general 3 managers haven't sorted our defensive issue so the staff must all be reading different stats that says there amazing

At the moment we seem to be doing the opposite and not spending a penny, how many players have we missed out on in the last 5 years because we tried to get them for a lower price I wonder. There is a time and place, when the need is sufficient, to just whack a wad on the bidding table and stop mucking around. I would say that need is now sufficient.

I dunno, Sakho had good games.

As few and far between as Klavan and Lovren. Sakho's no the answer.

We're always going to struggle defensively for 2 reasons, the way we set-up and the size of the team.

We play with a midfielder at fullback, up until 6 months ago an attack minded midfielder as our holding midfielder and 2 forwards/wingers/attacking midfielders as our box to box players. We're set up to attack and to defend on the front foot - the problem is when teams get past our first line of defense we're wide open. We're also a small side and unless we sign bigger players, we're always going to struggle against team that go direct. Look at our 11 today - Lovren's the only 1 you'd say was reasonable in the air, even Klavan (by CB standards at least) is short/not very strong in the air.

We were dreadful today though. You could see Clyne wasn't fit - I can't remember him getting beaten as easily and as often as he was today. You can forgive Klopp for not starting Matip after only finding out whether he could play last night but he should have been on for Klavan early in the 2nd half. Matip would have not only handled Llorente better but also given us somebody to play out of the back - Swansea were happy for Klavan and Lovren to step forward because they were never going to play a meaningful pass.

He's one of the best defenders at the club though, seems daft you can't get any games out of him
