It wasn't a great result for us that's for sure. Not because of the score, not because it was a rival, but more for the issues that it highlighted.
The defence was wobbly at times, resilient at others. I can accept that, it is after all a new look defence and it will take a little while for the new faces (Lovren, Manquillo, Moreno) to gel. Consider, after all, that if all 3 of them played then its only 1 defender (Skrtel) from last years defence. Changing 3 of your 4 back line will take time to gel after all.
IMHO , Manquillo is better than Johnson and I would rather see Manquillo getting a run than Johnson. No offence to Johnson, but he is the senior man in the back four, but it really doesn't show tbh.
I was impressed with Markovic, he looked lively and looked as if he had some tricks. Wasn't so impressed with Can, but need to see more of him. Would prefer it if Allen was a sub, rather than a starter at the moment.
Coutinho has looked a little out of sorts in both games so far this season, not sure why that is, but I'm hoping its just a small blip.
Sterling and Sturridge look fine and I think Balotelli in there too offers decent attack, but one thing I noticed yesterday compared to last season, was how slow the build up seemed up front. The penetration wasn't there that was present last season, all too often we got it into the final third and then kind of dithered , as if we weren't too sure what to do next. Lambert actually looked pretty sharp when he came on and I think he can do a job for us.
Traditionally we start the season slowly and its very early days, given that Man City only dropped points at home last season in 2 matches, I'm not too bothered about the loss in terms of points.
Spurs next will be tough and its conceivable that we may end up with 3pts from our first 9. However..get that match out of the way and in our next 6 matches, we face - Villa, West Ham, West Brom, QPR and Hull. That's a good possibility of picking up 5 wins out of 6 games and getting a roll going.
