Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [23rd - 26th January 2016]

Shockingly bad football from Chelsea second half. Remy somehow forgot how to do anything football related at all including just basic running. Hazard actually had a couple dribbles late on that weren't a joke and could have had two assists. Matic was awful throughout the game.

Against 10 men they had no ability to make the extra man count.

Ref, woeful second half, embarrassingly bad.

Ramsey, good god was he bad. Again multiple awful passes, constantly held on to the ball too long then lost it, also pretty pathetic dive about 3 seconds after Fabregas could barely be described as pulling him back.

Fabregas should have had a clear as day penalty with Kos trying to out idiot Mertesacker early in the second half. Honestly have no idea how the ref could not give it. Barely 5 mins later he gave Matic a instant yellow for a barge not even half as bad.

Ref certainly did his best to get us back into the game, as did almost the entire Chelsea side in the second half and we still couldn't play any actual decent football.

Well, no, because attackers would stop knocking the ball past the man (and out of play), and would instead control it/shoot/pass/whatever.

....and if he controls it he gets tackled.

By changing the rules as you suggest it's a no win situation for the attacking team. As soon as Howard comes flying out the attacker can only do 2 things, either control the ball and get fairly tackled or knock it past the keeper, get brought down and a goal kick is awarded.

I'm sorry but your argument makes no sense whatsoever.

Not laughing.... much

I'm laughing, at Arsenal fans who never see this coming. 11 goals scored against us by Chelsea since we last scored a goal against them, in the league anyway. We only managed to score against them in the charity shield when Chelsea didn't care about a worthless game and Arsenal played it like a cup final.

That we were going to bottle this somehow was a given.

It's not just knocking it past the 'keeper, though, it's knocking it out of play/having no intention of getting onto the ball they've flicked on. It's clear we just disagree! We've had the same in the past with red cards + pens for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, iirc.

Yea and you were wrong then too ;)

The flaw in what you're saying is that changing the rule will only result in defenders/goalkeepers not playing the ball and just taking the attackers out. It's the same with the red card/pen debate - defenders will give away pens knowing that the very worst they'll give away is a pen (which would be equal to the attack they denied) but could get away with it altogether. In both instances there has to be a deterrent there to stop defenders just taking forwards out.

It wouldn't mean they could just take the player out. Ten yards further forward, if Howard had taken him out then it would have been different/the ball might have been gettable after the flick on... Howard wouldn't have just been able to take him out.

And with the pen thing, the sanction could be a yellow and a pen... with the conversion rate of pens being ridiculously high. It's one clear goal scoring opportunity being replaced with another. I understand what you're saying with that debate... but again, we clearly just disagree :p.

I understand what youre saying, doesn't seem right that a player can just kick the ball out of touch with no intention of controlling it, then get a penalty. That's why sometimes they aren't given though as well.

What a joke lol. Still can't beat Chelsea with or without Mou lol. Words absolutely fail me as to how we just roll over when Chelsea play us.

Oh well just another day in the life of being a disappointed Arsenal fan. Why the hell was Le donkey taken off for Mert is truly truly beyond me. Why the hell was Mert playing when he shouldn't be anywhere near the team...why buy Gabriel and El Neny and not play them?? The mind truly boggles with Wenger and his stupid selections and subs.

Only bright spark was seeing Sanchez back on the pitch, other than complete utter tripe from us yet again. I suppose city drawing yesterday was a good result but with Leicester and Spuds winning, it's getting too tight at the top. The most infuriating things is that had we beaten Liverpool and Stoke in the past couple of weeks, we would have had a slight points gap but meh it's Arsenal and nothing is as easy as that lol.

Well done to Chelsea though for showing how to beat us time and time again. Funny thing is that they aren't that very good, what's more telling is that just about every team in the pl have beaten or drawn against them but Arsenal?? Nahhh lets just lose our heads and let them win lolololol.

If Arsenal are utter tripe yet again then the other teams must be something else entirely, considering we're near the top of the table and have been for most of the season. And England have 3 teams in the final 16 of the CL, I hate to think what all the other teams in Europe are, they should all give up. I don't understand why people get so irate with one loss when we've been so good all season.

Fight maybe, but Walcott, Campbell, Flamini, Ramsey, Mert, Monreal and Ozil were dire. Trying hard is part of the equation. Collectively almost the entire team had a dire game. Kos also should have conceded a penalty with another dire piece of defending.

Chelsea were truly, truly awful in the second half, they totally let us back into it and still we played like utter tripe. One shot on target wasn't it. Aside from the clear as day penalty, Remy and Willian could have added another 3 in the final 10 minutes easily.

6-7 first team players not showing up is absolutely rolling over, regardless of how much they run. Ozil started doing his frustrated flopping over every time he lost the ball in the final 15 minutes.

Arsenal in general put in these awful performance all too regularly against certain teams and/or in certain situations. Within the team there are specific players who are almost always terrible in big games.

Honestly one thing that peeves me off is Coquelin got injured a fair amount of time ago, there were rumours about buying this midfielder I think just before the transfer window started. We were desperate for someone to start ahead of Flamini and Arteta, but rather than have the transfer ready to go for Jan 1st.... somehow it took half the month and as such he's not ready to play yet. Of course like 99% of all football fans in the UK saw Flamini/Arteta as not remotely good enough and all knew Arsenal should buy a central midfielder in summer but Wenger refused.

The main place we lost the battle was in midfield. Fabregas owned us but the amount of space he had from the half way line to the edge of our box was embarrassing. He ran, or should I say jogged slowly, about 35 yards before eventually taking a shot without any serious attempt to stop him, we just sat off. Our central midfield did nothing to stop it. Flamini was dire defensively today.

...forgetting the 10 men maybe? we had 10 men, that says it really. Do you think Arsenal can beat Chelsea with 10 men?

Don't remember Arsenal when there were successful do you, with 10 men we put in some epic performances. CHelsea were absolutely awful in the second half, if we had the right players we could have beaten them with 9 players, maybe 8.

Do you disagree that Ramsey, Walcott, Flamini, Ozil were completely awful? Why did being down to 10 men mean Ramsey had to keep missing 5-10 yard passes by putting the ball behind players or smashing it out for a throw in, dire shooting, bad tackles or letting Fabregas literally run past him with the ball like Ramsey wasn't even there?

They were playing like crap before we went down to 10 men.

Huh? Just answer the question. We were never going to win that game going down to 10 men. Theres been plenty of times this season when we haven't played well and got the 3 points as well.

Edit, just noticed you said we could beat Chelsea with 8 players. :o Jesus...hahaha

The game was over as soon as Arsenal went down to ten men. Had it been someone like Villa or Sunderland that Arsenal were playing then I would say they could still go on and win even with ten men, but it's just not going to happen against a big side like Chelsea. That's nothing against Arsenal, I don't back any side to beat a fellow top four side with a man less.

Chelsea last year, playing well, sure less than a 1% chance to win. CHelsea aren't close to playing like a top four side either currently or this season in general. They've improved a bunch but they still aren't great.

They were absolutely horrific in the second half. Remy put in what I would say was one of the single worst performances I've seen on a football pitch in years. The second half we had plenty enough possession to do something but instead most of our players just handed possession straight back to them and failed to play well.
