Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [27th - 28th August 2011]

Ive heard this line so many times and it still makes no sense.

"We had £35m to spend but no real strikers worth that amount would come to us so we spent £35m on one that would".

That is what you are effectively saying and its complete madness.

The argument always was that Torres was 50mil, everyone knew Liverpool got at least 10-20mil more than they should have for an increasingly dodgey looking Torres. This reflected directly in the price Newcastle could get.

Same way Nasri is only worth 15-20mil, with one year left on his contract you'd normally be lucky to get 8mil, we got 24mil.

Cahill is worth 15mil MAYBE(if he is as good as rated), in the last year of his contract, you'd think 5-6mil, but they know Arsenal just got an extra 16mil for a player who wasn't worth anywhere near that, so Bolton are basically saying, if you get full price for Nasri, and the contract makes no difference, it won't here either.

I will say this more in hope than expectation. Kenny is the new Redknapp. 18 months down the line the English players in this team will stop playing so well and it will all collapse. At the moment they are like spurs were. Give it a season in the champions league and we shall see.

He will retire as soon as hope is replaced by expectation.

Cahill was NEVER for sale for the money your esteemed leader offered.

It was a complete waste of time.

Arsenal need players and everyone receiving a bid from them know that.

Cahill as a £15m player should command a £20m fee from Arsenal for no other reason than the whole season is a write-off if they dont get a couple of actual defenders in. The selling club is in the box seat and rightly so.

As a Utd fan, rightly or wrongly we bought De Gea for £18m at the start of the window. Imagine the panic if we were still sitting with £50m in the bank and a need for a keeper? Peter Bonetti would be about £20m at this point.

Bolton have got huge debts, Cahill's only got a year left on his deal and won't sign a new one. With no other clubs interested, Arsenal can dictate terms to Bolton. £6m may be too low but £20m is ridiculous.

Its a case of who blinks first.

He is a £15m player and if Arsenal bid £12m they will have him for their next game.

Its getting embarassing watching them argue over a fee that shouldnt be an issue.

I bet they wish they paid the cash for Jones already.

It all depends on how much they want him. I mentioned it in the transfer thread, if go back a few weeks and you had the likes of Bolton, Everton and Birmingham demanding big money for Cahill, Jagielka and Dann as you had Arsenal, Liverpool and possibly one or both of Spurs and City looking for a CB. With Liverpool about to sign Coates and City/Spurs not looking likely, Arsenal have the field to themselves.

All 3 of the above ideally need to sell and Arsenal can use that to their advantage. If Arsenal are brave enough, they could pick up either Dann or Cahill (maybe not Jagielka) at a bargain price.

The problem is a few places up the league = a few million in the coffers.

Its a trade-off for the selling club. In the case of Arsenal i would LOVE to see a Liverpool or whoever steal Cahill from under their nose!

I understand, that's why £6m is probably too low but there's no harm is starting there.

It's obvious that Bolton announced the bid to try and flush out other bidders but seemingly there aren't any. None that Cahill would choose over Arsenal anyway. Bolton can't afford to lose him on a free so if Arsenal really want him, they'll get him. But it will all depend on whether they want him and didn't see the £6m bid as a speculative punt and/or to try and force Everton's (for example) hand over Jagielka.

What would you of said is a fair price to pay for Cahill Baz?

In the current situation? Probably around £10m would be enough to get him.

That's not to say he's only worth £10m. Had he had a couple more years left on his contract and/or a couple of clubs came in for him at the same time, he could have easily gone for £16m.

I was going to say in the current situation between 8-12 million would have be enough to get him and if he had ~3 years left 14-18 million.

I was just wondering because you said 6 million was too little.

I think for anywhere between 8-12 million he'd be a decent buy for Arsenal. I wouldn't expect them to pay more then that.

Watching Match of the Day basically to see Drogba get knocked out :o

That was naughty by Torres, could have easily been a red.
