Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [27th - 28th August 2011]

Isn't Carrol still struggling to get fit?

35 million could have bought someone like Benzema, Falcao, Aguero, ect and probably still have a lot left over. Too late now.

Liverpool really don't need Carroll, what a massive waste of money, even if he was 10m it still would be a ridiculous price to play for a bench player, Liverpool's best team was out there apart from Gerrard today and the tactics deployed are how they should play each week. I'm not criticising Carroll, it's not his fault, but Liverpool are best without him.

Imagine if 'pool had spent that money more wisely, there's no reason why they couldn't of challenged for the title.

There is no evidence they would have spent it more wisely though as they paid top dollar for most of their signings.

Dalglish is in the happy position of having spent "title challenging" money with "top 4" expectation.

Possibly but like I said, I'm not criticising him. From the play I saw today Liverpool were NOT hoofing into the area which Carroll would need them to do. Fair enough Suarez could get injured and they can put Carroll in there but they'd have to change the way they play again, they need a like for like striker for Suarez.

There's no doubt that on the whole we've played better with Kuyt/Suarez up front than with Suarez/Carroll up front (although we were excellent first half vs Sunderland and in the games against City and away to Sunderland last year) but imo, that's more down to the players around Carroll than Carroll himself.

We're looking to get the ball into Carroll far too soon. I'm not talking about Carra's trade mark chipped pass from back to front, but whenever we're within 40 yards from goal, we're just lumping the ball into the box.

We need to find the balance between playing to Carroll's strengths and the strengths of the rest of the side. If and when we can do that, the variety in our attack could make us incredibly hard to play against.

edit: And the variety in our attack doesn't have to be on the pitch at the same time. At times it'll be horses for courses. Jamie Redknapp made a good point (for once) today, we were up against Cahill and Knight this afternoon; who would they prefer playing against, Carroll/Suarez or Kuyt/Suarez?

It'll be like watching Spurs ;)

The majority of Liverpool support criticised the play (second half) against Sunderland, Arsenal had 10 men and Bolton are...Bolton.

I like Gerrard, not sure how he could make them bad :p

Wasn't Gerrard absent for the vast majority since Dagleish took back over? Liverpools downfall will be Gerrard coming back into the squad.

And all them players you mentioned i HIGHLY doubt would even come to us with no europe...

Jesus give Carroll chance to gel with rest of the new players and squad we might of got him in Jan but hasnt played tons.

Yes atm he is pretty meh but its too early to just right him off

No one is writing him off but the fact is you paid an absolute premium fee for him in January and the reason for a premium fee is to minimise the risk of him not working out. You should never spend £35m on a "punt" or a player with injury problems or a player who may not fit into your system etc. £35m should buy as close to a "sure thing" as possible. Of course there will always be unforeseen situations that make or break a transfer but at these prices they should be minimal.

The point with Carroll that there are still a lot of question marks about him. He COULD be awesome, he COULD be poor. He COULD lead the England line for a decade or he may not be capped. For £35m you shouldnt have to worry about these things. That price should secure proven quality.

Its not Carrolls fault but its a fact.

Adam's been playing pretty deep, way back with Lucas from what I can tell. I would have thought he would come in for Kuyt?

In my opinion Kuyt is the one thats letting Suarez do his thing as he is a really unselfish player. I think Gerrard will ruin that

Adam didn't seem to deep, they have Lucas for that duty.

I think there wouldn't be much of a change with Gerrard coming in, only improving the team more.
