Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [27th Jan - 1st Feb 2012]

Bit harsh, it sounds like a cliche but there really are very few easy away games in the PL, Fulham and Swansea away especially are very tough places to go and get 3 points from

EDIT: I realise that does slightly contradict my previous post :o

Probably best that you dont come in here then lol...we are ***ing terrible at the moment...we have dropped so many points in the last 2-3 games that we will be lucky if we stay in the top 10.

Seriously Arsenal wont push Wenger, he will have to leave of his own accord and i cant see that happening.

**** this sorry assed team, RVP will probably leave at end of the season...think he realises that Arsenal are a sinking ship especially when we cant beat teams like Bolton, Fulham and Swansea.

Our only hope is to brainwash Stan's wife into being football obsessed and using some of those Walmart billions to buy half a squad.

Up to fifth again :D

January without a strike force and we are still fifth :D

Beyond my wildest, wettest dreams :p

:D

Am heading over Newcastle to watch the Wolves game at the end of the month cant bloody wait. Tickets came today just have to book flights and hotel

I really like the new BBC Sports website myself. The live game pages are great and it seems to have more information that the old site so I don't see the issue.

You missed out Senegal's abysmal showing meaning your strike force also coming back early.

Thing is, even at the start of the ACN, Newcastle couldn't have asked for a better run of games, sure, they could have gotten even more points, but could have gotten less as well :p

Hell, that Fulham game, who knows you could be joint 4th if that Fulham penalty was never given.

Still got a few relatively easy games and two actual strikers to play with. 4th is still asking a lot because most people would think Chelsea can both still go on a good run and even a "crap" top 4 team is called crap in terms of title winning, still better than the rest of the league....... normally.

4th is something I've thought for some time any of Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Pool and Newcastle could achieve, Spurs seem to have leapfrogged Chelsea and seem plenty good enough for 3rd.

You've got Tiote and two top strikers to come back, 2 of which have been outstanding this season and one who could potentially be a great signing and lets be honest, at his worst will probably be 20 times the player Ameobi is.

Sunderlands goal of the season is going to be really difficult to choose this year...campbells tonight was class.

Pleased (if that's the right word) to hear Lindegaard is out for at least 4 weeks with some kind of injury (didn't read the whole article as I wasn't that bothered). Hopefully a run in the side and a chance to reclaim the number 1 shirt for DDG

Got a horrible feeling Amos will be picked though :(

Anyone else think Obertan looks like Roger out of american dad?

I've been saying it for weeks the PL is the poorest it's been in years, it started last season and it's even worse this. Could be a record amount of investment in new players for the top teams this summer with almost every team needing major rebuilding

Who can afford to without obliterating FFP (looks like at least one of Chelsea or Arsenal will definitely not be in the CL , so even less income to cover any expenditure, and potentially both ). Even then unless Wenger is sacked he wont spend a fortune anyway

The most Fergie has ever spent in one window is around £60m (Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson - as well as last summer). Utd probably have the money but its unlikely it will be spent :( . A few youngsters may well get Europa league outings to try and progress them to 1st team for next season, but Fergie wont spend huge amounts either way imo

Man City dont need to spend big (not that that ever stopped them lol), but they also need to be very careful from where they stand currently

Spurs may well get a lot of players, but will they be premium players (at a high price) or decent /upcoming players at a more reasonable price (I would guess the latter)

Obviously Chelsea have the money , but they are running at a loss also in regards to FFP

Liverpool........is it just luck/ lack of where they are currently , even so will KD get rid of so many new faces who are performing averagely or just paper over the cracks where he can for the time being?

While most teams NEED to spend huge amounts (or at least the fans think they need to lol) , maybe apart from Spurs - but even then CL again implies they will need some decent investment - I cant see many teams being able to cover a huge spending spree if FFP is applied

Yeah that was my initial thought, City aside I honestly don't see where the money is going to come from, Man Utd and Fergie have been trotting out the 'our team is just fine as it is' line despite the glaring holes in certain positions which you normally hear from clubs that are broke, Arsenal won't spend, Chelsea - again that doesn't seem to be their modus operandi, Spurs - maybe? Liverpool - I don't see Dalglish being given another 30-40million odd to spend.

It seems like a perfect storm of a number of 'big stars' either moving on, retiring or becoming ineffectual with the FFP and just a lack of big money in the sport (again, City aside) that unless one of the non-City teams comes up with the cash I can see City dominating next season especially.

Who knows though, Fergie to retire at the grand old age of 70 and his 25th season in charge of Man Utd, Man Utd to sign Mourinho and let him go on a lil' spending spree - stranger things have happened.

Why do people have this naive idea that money is the only way to spend to get better.

Big hint, if Arsenal hadn't spent a ridiculously long time paying Walcott to do an impression of a headless chicken, we'd have that much more to spend on new players.

How much was Gibson on, how much is Park on, you refuse to use Berbatov, how much is Rooney on.

The quality of football has NOTHING at all, in any way to do with money, the lack of quality is PURELY down to WASTE. That is it, every player who simply shouldn't be near a top 6 team and some who shouldn't be near premierleague teams........ don't have to be. Years of mistakes on top of mistakes, refusing to admit mistakes and sticking by mistakes.

Hell, Bruce to O'neill, lack of good managers hurts as well. Lack of teams playing 4-4-2.

Jesus, Newcastle haven't fluked where they are and they are a prime example of everything I'm saying. They are reducing the budget, and improving drastically by getting rid of the wrong players and bringing in the right ones. None of them have cost a bomb, most have been insanely good value. Problem is, their best performances have put teams that cost both 3 times as much to run in wages, and cost 10 times as much to put together.... have pretty much put them to shame.

Not to pick on Utd, but Newcastle played truly excellently in that game. Simple stuff, good manager, right players, not being drawn into peeing fights over wages(Utd should have told Rooney to do one).

If Utd didn't have the debt they'd be able to outspend basically everyone, every year, well within FFP rules.

How much can you blame spending issues, when Arsenal have spunked away, 6mil a year on Diaby to not play and Walcott who most of us wish wouldn't play? 5 years, 30million quid? For guys who would look out of place in the Wigan team for being too crap?

United have a great team when everyone is fit, we have just been massively unlucky this year with injuries. If we get Cleverly and Anderson back in the middle of the pitch and Vidic in defence we should be fine. I'm hoping that we will keep hold of Pogba and that he keeps playing well.

Whilst I wont claim to know all the ins and outs of the FFP as long as clubs keep their wage bill down i.e. removing the dead wood from their respective squads before investing in new players then they should be fine.

We started this initiative in the summer by clearing the likes of O'Shea & Brown off the wage book in order to bring in the younger players, we got a pittance for them in transfer fees but I'm sure the wage bill has gone down from what they were earning to what the likes of Jones & Smalling are on. In previous years I'm sure Fergie would have kept the former two around so not to have to over rely on the younger players but I think it's very telling that we got rid of the senior players to lower the wage bill.

Chelsea have also got some big money earners off their books as well recently in Anelka & Alex and I'm sure they'll be more departures from them in the summer (Drobga, Ferreira and who knows maybe even some first team regulars like Mikel and Lampard).

City dont need to spend but will.

Arsenal need to spend but wont.

Depending on the Modric situation Spurs will be looking to get a top class centre forward in if nothing else.

I'm sure Dalglish will be given more money to spend, whether it's as much as he has over the past year is probably debatable but I'm sure he'll be given a fair amount.

Out of the teams that that the FFP is going to effect the most they are in the process of getting rid of a lot of dead weight so I cant see the FFP really restricting any spending this summer tbh.

LOL if only...although id love us to spend some decent money on players and not players who are average but i dont want us to become the next City/Chelsea ie spunking money left, right and centre.
