Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th - 30th December 2019]

These offside calls aren't really a VAR issue though. Offsides will always be a matter of fact decision and under the current laws and with the current technology (people will claim it's not 100% accurate but it's far more accurate than a lino's eyesight), if you're leaning 1mm offside then it's offside.

The issues we're having with these offside calls isn't VAR but the laws in their current format. Imo they need to scrap the 'any part of the body that can play the ball' bit and just use foot positions.
This.

The offside thing is a problem with using tech to steadfastly implement a rule that's crap, rather than the tech being substandard.

While the technology will always be a matter of fact in that sense, it's also being interpreted by officials. To me, if you have to start drawing lines and it's still clearly 50/50, the goal has to stand.

To me, that looks onside.

Yep, said it earlier any decision that warrants drawing lines they should just go with onfield (linesman) decision like in cricket.
If this is the answer then scrap VAR. There's absolutely no point in using it if we're going to end up still making wrong decisions.

The technology for offsides isn't perfect but it's far more accurate than a linesman's eyesight. We're complaining about them getting far more decisions correct, simply because they're really close. As I said above, VAR isn't the problem but the current offside law. Change the offside law so that a player that's leaning in an offside position is no longer offside.

Even if they change the rules to feet only it's still questionable whether you can be accurate from an angled position, especially when there's only mm/cm in it. That's why in athletics they have the camera directly on the line and why linesmen are expected to run with the last man and not just stand at the half way line looking diagonally. Then you have the fact that it's a 25fps camera and not 1000fps, look at the image shown there the ball is in two places it's a blur. To be anywhere near 100% accurate you'd need a camera directly in line and a high frame camera to capture the exact moment the ball is passed.

IMO they need to just do away with VAR intervening in extremely tight calls, ban the use of lines and if it's not "clear and obvious" to the naked eye then just trust the linesman and go with on field call.

However limited the technology is in your view, it's still far more accurate than a linesman's eyesight. I'm sure there's been a goal either wrongly given or ruled out for offside this season by VAR but far more would have been wrongly given or ruled out without VAR.

The single purpose of using technology is to end up making more correct decisions and that's what has happened with offsides. What people don't like is that somebody leaning into an offside position is considered offside, that can be easily changed however to not use VAR for tight offside calls, which I'd guess make up the majority of wrong offside decisions, would be crazy. We'd still have all the delays to check whether a decision was close and end up with just as many wrong decisions as before. You might as well just scrap it altogether.

Didn’t need VAR for that one.

I’m with Baz on this it’s not VAR that’s the issue it’s the rules haven’t been updated to reflect VAR being introduced.

I don't see what Jose is improving. His sole trait seems to be that he isn't Poch and so Tobey extended. Jan's legs have gone and Poch was right to try and move him on. Eriksen is still off. The rest of the squad has stagnated and looks as bad as when Poch had them.

All the money we will give to Jose to make changes we could have backed Poch with.

Nobody ever said that football is a logical, sound, well run business.

Quite the opposite, in fact.
