There's not much he could have done. It look like Ferdinand nudged Lescott into Smalling's path which gave Kompany a free run. When you've got half a dozen players crossing runs, these things can happen from time to time.

Why was Smalling marking Kompany? Surely Kompany is the most dangerous guy at the corners therefore the best/strongest defender i.e. Ferdinand should mark him..

Going to be an uphill struggle for United as they are going to have to go after City rather than just counter attacking..
