Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th January - 2nd February 2017]

Yep apparently Martial only did enough to sit on the bench setting up two goals. Classic. Can't wait to see who he plays instead.

Probably Mata who has missed open goals more often than scoring recently

(only slightly joking)

Hazard needs to sort himself out again, he's been woeful since the start of the year and that was handy point all other results considered.
.

Cant really see Chelsea being caught even as a remote possibility

I guess the away point is good from a team confidence point of view more than the actual point on the board at this stage/ in their position - you have so many options for the most part (seemingly) , only a significant injury to Courtois - that would in turn possibly unsettle the defence - could make any difference.

One thing I'll say in his defence, even when he's not playing well like he's not been, he's never a passenger. He'll always put a shift in and his work rate and intelligence in his pressing is key to our attacking. It would be great if he didn't have these games where he forgot how to control, pass or finish though.

He reminds me A LOT of Dirk Kuyt in that regard, will miss some sitters but will give you 100% in every match, against every opposition no matter how big or how small.

Saw a link to the Juve manager Alegri (sp?) being touted for replacing Arsene.

I'm not sure what I would rather:

A) Arsene out with the prospect of possibly losing Ozil & Sanchez but a new manager.
B) Arsene in the back boardroom and still controlling signings and a new manager.
C) New proven manager with no AW involvement.

It's a pretty daunting prospect AW leaving but I do now think it's time. So many teams seem to get their tactics 100% against us and it's almost as if we have no answers for it.

I would be sad to see him leave but ultimately think it's time for a fresh approach, I know it's doesn't always work first time with a new manager but I think it's worth the risk of not finishing top 4 but having a new manager with fresh ideas.

This could be undone if he signs a new deal, I wouldn't mind as long as we made serious strides to replacing him in the next 2/3 seasons.

2nd in the league with 45 points still to play for, still in the FA Cup, still in the Champions League.

Arsenal have played the least games against the top 3rd of the league and have a dire record against the top 3rd they've played so far... meaning we're almost certainly 6-9 points higher than we'd be with a more rounded spread of games. Unless we turn around form against the top teams dramatically, I'd be surprised if we finished less than 15 points off the top which just isn't close to good enough.

Bayern actually look the weakest they have for some time but I still don't think we'll beat them, probably close one leg, thrashed in the other, but we simply aren't going to win the Cl with this team, we won't get to a final. FA cup is also known as the who cares cup. Southampton didn't care about it and Arsenal fans went crazy over a 5-0 win of a virtually u21 side. Our 'b' team is many many many times better than theirs.

It's the usual thing though, I thought directly after winning that game that with the massive over exaggeration of the performance(discounting the opposition in effect) that we'd have the usual Arsenal reaction. Over play how great a performance it was, get super arrogant... suck hard in the next game against opposition who actually try to beat us.

So if Chelsea put it in an incredible shift and win 80% of their games, you don't think "fair enough, they deserve to win it, they've been superb all season"?

So seems most teams are suffering from a slump.. even a one week winter break would make a massive difference as I think any more like in other leagues would disrupt the flow of things.

What have Chelsea got to do with it? Did I say they weren't going to be deserving? Arsenal have currently won 60% of their games that is broadly similar to Leicester winning the title last year, except we've currently lost 17% of our games while Leicester lost 7%. 60% is low for a title win, 17% lost is insanely high and again... we've had the lowest number of games played against the top 3rd as well as one of the worst against the top 3rd when we've played, meaning there is an incredibly high chance that our current record is comparably better than it will be at the end of the season.

I'm talking about Arsenal's performance. Chelsea can win 80% of their games, win the title and we could be 6 points behind having lost only due to Chelsea's brilliance, instead coming 15 points behind and losing because even if chelsea had only won 65% of their games... we'd still wouldn't have won.

We're third in a season in which Liverpool are still building and have spent very little since Klopp took over, in which Utd and City have vastly underperformed, have new managers, new ideas and new players... all of whom will likely perform better next year, can the same be said for Arsenal? Is this team thrown together in the past year with a new manager, or is there zero excuses for another 'meh' season.

Ignore how well Chelsea are doing, this is about Arsenal, Arsenal aren't performing well enough. When Utd and City finally settle down as teams, they'll go past Arsenal who have no gear left to find with Wenger in charge.

Why ignore how well Chelsea are doing, if they win 80% of their games, they are deserving of the title. What if Arsenal finish 2nd, 6 points behind Chelsea? How can you say Arsenal are underperforming when the fact is they are not underperforming, you talk about these other sides overtaking Wenger, where is the evidence of that? What if next year he finishes above them again, having spent a fraction of the other sides around them?
