Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29th October - 2nd November 2011]

Newcastle haven't stopped all game the effort is incredible, real togetherness about them now.

Unfortunately smallish squad and bound to get some injuries at some stage.

Squad bigger and better than last season mate. Had nothing but a bunch of teens on the bench. Cover for defence is needed. That's where we lack numbers

Pleasantly surprised with that, they played their socks off tonight.

3rd and unbeaten in the league, 1 point behind Manchester United.

Who would have thought it at the start of the season!

Massive performance and a fantastic result! Great performance and I cannot name 1 player who was not marvellous! Best was especially good, feet like glue which we needed to take off pressure tonight.

Horrific game to watch though, Stoke shortening the pitch then hoofing it all game was shocking decision we could do little else but respond in kind!

Love it! Well done lads! Amazing performance!!!!

The real question is will 3rd place disappear into the media black hole 4th place has occupied for the season thus far and will the top 4, which became the top 3 now magically become the top 2? :D

Love it! Keep confounding the pundits and critics lads!!!! Haway the lads!!!! :D

Really impressed with Newcastle these last few weeks, at first i thought it was just a good start but they are really building a all round strong team. To think they have recently added Cabaye, Ba and Obertan etc they look settled straight away.

Thats it! I'm suing sky! They stole my line "so would you say Newcastke out Stoked Stoke?" I claim my intellectual property rights :p:D

Live again on Saturday :p

To be fair I said 4points from Wigan/Stoke/Everton so I would happily take a point against Everton at St James before we play city, utd and Chelski which will be painful :(

Fair assessment by Neville about prospects. Top 6 will be tough but achievable IF everyone stays fit (which won't happen :( )

What critics, I seem to distinctly remember saying the signings were great, they were ditching dead weight and trouble makers, and doing fantastically well financially, with an improving squad.......... ;)

I think Simpson had a, dodgy game, mostly the first 15-20 mins though, his clearances and passing was woeful but he did improve. Gutierez was freaking awesome throughout defensively just brilliant, offensively decent but not great.

Ba looked quality for West Ham, good buy, was he on a free, I can't quite remember, another truly strange decision by West Ham, I think they paid a decent fee for him, but gave him a clause to go on a free if they got relegated, he's a 15mil striker easily, maybe 10mil due to persistent knee problem.

Its not a bad squad, if Marvaeux(or whatever he's called) ends up decent and Arfa makes a good comeback from injury then you have cover on the wings, Egghead looks far more consistent than he ever did at Utd.

If they can get one striker, and have Best/idiot brothers as backup, get a CB in then they've actually get a fairly decent squad in terms of cover. At which point they should start to be in the position to bring in a bunch of young/cheap players and watch a few break through and a bunch be not good enough, but with a good team to start with that's all they really need.

It's also worth thinking Newts, that come Jan, Newcastle can probably attract some decent players, in summer players would be wondering if they were joining a team destined for a relegation fight, come January, they might be thinking Newcastle, fighting for a euro spot and a good platform to a move further up the league

Really impressed with the lads tonight, thought they might fall at the side after the defeat at Blackburn but they put in a good shift.

I'm a bit surprised that everyone still assumes we are going to falter when it comes to playing the other big 4 (didn't think I'd be saying that this season) but we usually put in a decent show against them and had some good results last season, granted I don't expect to win but I think 2 draws from the 3 games is a possibility.

Credit has to go to our head scout tbh Graham Carr doing a wounderfull job

Scouting who exactly? Tiote, Cabaye, Ba?

Having a look at who the club has bought since Feb 2010, its a very small list, and unknowns, James perch is about the only one. Arfa, the three listed above, who else exactly, most/all of them were well known, Tiote had just won a league with Twente(maybe the year after), Cabaye just won the french league, Ba was very good with West Ham, Arfa was very well known.

As far as I can tell the list is, since he arrived, Perch, Arfa, Tiote, cabaye, Ba, Obertan, Santon and Marveaux, surely all of them but Perch were very well known, most being chased by many clubs.

Considering Perch would be his only real "find" and that guys a worse yellow card magnet than Tiote :p

Not critics as in ocukers critics like Venables, Lawro and others who spent the pre-season bashing us, keeps me laughing as well as celebrating :p

Ba was a free. Unbelievable signing and as you say, if we sold him tomorrow you would be looking at £10mill+.

I agree DM that we need a CB, CF and I would say another CM in case of a longer term suspension/injury for Tiote/Cabaye. Otherwise a decent squad.

My only worry is that we are no longer a top club and our talent will be gutted every transfer window. So far Carroll, Enrique next could be Tiote/Cabaye/Krul or Colo who are all getting links with bigger clubs now. It's tough to replace quality with quality on a tight budget.

Fair play to Pardew and Cashley is beginning to a few people round as well so some decent additions, not big names we can do without egos, and with a bit luck and hard work could be a top 10 finish :)

If its James Perch, he's been around for years, he was an integral part of getting my Forest team promoted on FM years ago...

Well played by Newcastle though, im sure it was only the other week that UTD scraped a point at Stoke...
