Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th April - 2nd May 2016]

I'll be brutally honest, when Leicester announced Ranieri as manager, I thought "he'll be gone with 3 months". I don''t think I was the only one either. I know Lineker did. Seemed a proper round peg for a square hole.

Watching MOTD, Spurs' players lost their nerve tonight, got far too fired up and went beyond physical into borderline vicious.

They can pay easily!!

The owner is one of the richest men in the world

That doesn't mean he wants to put much of his own money in. It's not like they have been splashing the cash previously. It's not like this is a new dawn for premiership football. A freak has happened and full credit to them but normal service will be resumed and the new Thai fans will go back to supporting whoever wins next year.

Whether he wants to spend or not, he can't. Leicester have to break even.

All of the power hungry foreign owners will expect their managers to do a Ranieri on a shoe string budget from now on.

Edit: Can Gabby Logan or Jacqui Oatley not do it in their pants instead?

If Leicester didn't win the title, Spurs was my second choice. After that disgraceful display tonight, I'm so glad they didn't.

well i'm chuffed upon reflection

none of the big 4 won the title and we've got cl qualification, fantastic manager, great squad, new stadium coming and i've just hit 20,000 posts :D

Err, no they don't. Where is the rule that a club has to break even? Under FFP rules you can both absolutely make a loss and also absolutely pay a friend to some foreign company to sponsor your team for an amount that covers any losses. FFP helps rich owners, not hinders them.

Anyway the more important thing to realise is last year Leicester had a wage bill of 48million pounds, this year Leicester will bring in just a touch over 90mil from tv/league money. Next year it would go up even if they got relegated, they'll have more games on tv in the league meaning more money and they'll have group stage money CL money, both of which would together increase what they'd lose from the league position loss in cash which would only be like 15-20mil range.

CL money this year would mean getting to the r16 stage would bring in around 22mil euros, another 6 for winning that round. I think r16 is more than possible considering the quality of 2 teams in most groups and they'll be seeded first.

A large increase in their sponsorship deal for a champions and CL qualified team wouldn't be deemed insane even if they got an extra 30mil for 'fake' sponsorship from their owner. Asking for 75mil a year like Utd would raise flags but not a reasonable increase.

The team can really quite clearly afford to increase their wage bill very significantly if required without taking on losses or even pumping extra money into the club, the latter would just increase what they can spend.
