Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th Dec 2011 - 4th Jan 2012]

I think Aguero cost more than our entire team including our subs bench!

the radio five live commentary is excellent now I have listened to it this morning..McClaren was co-commentating and with about 10 minutes to go he pointed out that city were leaving too few back..their own confidence got the better of them

they need to just be more patient..they play the game like a school side sometimes..everybody wants to attack and nobody wants to defend

Meh, not really, end of the day they dropped one point while chasing 3, playing that way if they get the 3 points in maybe 3 out of 5 games, keep the 1 point in one game and lose 1 in 5 games like that, well, they lose one point, and gain 6.... so gain 5 total.

McClown is just that, a guy who plays it safe and gets fired a lot. Playing it safe doesn't win you anything, you've sometimes got to risk losing, to win. How many teams beat Barca by putting everyone behind the ball and hoping for a draw, almost no one ever, how many teams, even against an epic barca team actually get a draw or even a win when playing all out attack against Barca, more teams.

Think about the champs league, Inter are the first team in ages to play the "hide in your own half and pray for a lucky goal to win the game" tactic and actually won, many far better teams have done the same and lost.

I'd take City going for the win in every game over being boring and with 5 minutes to go deciding a point is enough and just sitting back and killing off the game.

Don't forget that they only lost that point due to a bad decision anyway, he was clear as day offside, funny as hell though :p

Meh, Sunderland could have run into the corner like big girls and killed off the game and got a point, what would McClown have said if they went for the goal, lost the ball and City went right up the other end and scored, he'd be saying City played it great by pushing forwards and Sunderland were stupid for not playing it safe.

Without City and Chelsea getting fast cash injections to propel them up the table the Premier league would be much more 'ruined'.

United, Liverpool, Arsenal would have ran further ahead purely from being in the Sky Club and have being in the right place at the right time in the early 90's.

When talking about the media quoting city's transfer fees you need to remember when they talk about city they like to use the transfer amount + wages over 5 years to inflate the price, this is done for no other club.

If you want to read about City's finances and why it's not as bad as everyone thinks it is and that we are well on the way to being sustainable within the next 5 years should read this: http://swissramble.blogspot.com/2011/12/manchester-city-masterplan.html

It's a really well thought out and presented article which I can't recommend enough. In fact the site as a whole if you are interested in the business side of football.

Whilst i agree with most of your post this part about sustainable made me chuckle. I spent the summer of 2003 expecting chelsea to sell off our prized assest like frank and eidur or go bankrupt. Then along came a rich russian and the fun started. He bought in a very clever man in to run the cluvthat has now disappeared from football, peter kenyon.

PK promised that chelsea would grow their worldwide support and tv rights to become a world leading club. This would allow us to remove the artificial life support of RA. Since that statement ~2005 nothing has changed. We still need regular injections of cash (buying preferred shares) from RA and its still run like a private yacht, with Torres being a new bathroom added this year.

I would love chelsea to be a sustainable club but that is not going to happen when Barca, RM, and City all use their financial firepower and chelsea want to compete.

The only good thing to come of the last 8 years is that Utd basically cannot own the EPL like they used to. The debt they now have means that clubs have a chance, whether they take it is another matter.

I think in terms of Chelsea and City the main differences are how the money is being pumped into the club.

City's money has been put as much into the surrounding area of East Manchester, the development of training grounds youth facilities etc as it has the club. We have also set up one of the best scouting networks in the world (which we share with Barca and Chelsea off the top of my head - might be inaccurate but the staff have moved between the three at least)

City have much more room for expansion and growth then Chelsea however saying that, I expect both to easily pass FFPR, which lets be honest has been set up to stop Chelsea/City/PSG happening again.

Really boils down to jealously / the 'big boys' not wanting their party crashed. I remember Roman taking over, we stayed up on goal difference I think and leeds went down instead. I wasn't jealous, I was glad there would be a change.

I watch a lot of non premiership football (Doncaster Rovers & Huddersfield) and talking to non EPL fans there is hardly any resentment towards City & Chelsea infact, most are glad that it isn't the same teams stealing their young players.

More top teams = more TV money for the lower clubs in cup draws etc :p

Dont think its changed that much - Utd are winning just as much as they did before (admittedly its only 50% over the eight years you are talking about compared to 12 in 19 as a total from EPL years, but its still pretty close)

Of course we shouldnt mention sponsorships for City that are totally out of whack to what has gone before/ their proven results, helping to make fair play a little more even in their favour.

I did put in the little caveat that its up to the other teams to take the chance and to be honest the resources up until the last 3 years kept them going.

It was like watching your car petrol warning light come on and then you still keep going until life just disappears. I think most will agree the failure to replace Ronaldo was the warning light coming on.

Well done Sunderland for beating City, given Utd and others a better chance of catching up with City.

LOLworthy that City with all the talent they have at their disposal couldnt score one goal against Sunderland:p. Even more happier that Nasri isnt doing so well at City, i suppose all that money hes making is making up for his uselessness:p

As for tonights game against Fulham??...we drew with them a few weeks ago so i imagine it will be much the same:(...plus with Vermaelen out, i wonder how our defence is going to line up lol.

Saying that i do hope RVP bags a few goals tonight...hoping that we get a win but my gut feeling says its another draw :/

250k a week?
Well that is wrong straight away as the highest paid is Tevez and he is on 200k and the next highest is Yaya at circa 160k.

So because we have a lot of quality players in our team and are paying wages higher than most clubs we should expect the commentators and pundits to laud over everything that the opponent does when they play us?

Just unbiased commentary would be nice.

and ok. Thanks for letting me know. Will keep your thoughts in mind for the next 6 months.

EDIT:
+1 BaZ87

wayne bridge £90k p/w lolz

Really need some of our injured players back for Wednesday. We cant go to Newcastle with Carrick in the back 4 up against Ba. Hoping for;

---------------De Gea---------------
Rafael--Smalling--Ferdinand--Evra
Valencia---Carrick---Jones---Nani
---------------Rooney
------------------Berbatov

Subs: Lindegaard, Fryers, Anderson, Park, Gibson, Welbeck, Hernandez

I expect Rooney and Gibson will be back in the squad after their boxing days misdemeanour's

I've gambled on Rooney as FF capitan.

If Berbalad doesn't start I will write an angry letter to Ferguson, in my own blood to show the severity.

Cole lucky not to get a red for kicking a guy kung fu style

That should have been a red for the wolves tackle on torres. Going to be a red at some point, ref is losing contrl

Not in a million years should that have been a red for Lampard, the yellow after for a Wolves player was utterly ridiculous though, and not convinced Torres didn't just dive for the yellow after that.

Lampard was, on the ground, he tried to pull his leg away, made contact but due to the bent leg not much in it. The player, and the Wolves players didn't make a big deal about it, probably because most of them know Lampard is a very honest player who doesn't try to hurt players. If he was off the ground, jumped in or something, that is one thing, never a red.

lol, game is certainly getting interesting though, reckless kick by Cole, then Doyle had a little bit of a kick out while on the floor, the throwing the ball was handbags though, who cares about that.

EDIT:- keep forgetting Frimpong is playing, can't believe(didn't see the early tackles the commentator keeps mentioning) I haven't seen Frimpong attempt to injure a chelsea player yet. Wouldn't be surprised if in a game like this it is him who ends up getting sent off.
