Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [30th September - 2nd October 2011]

What is wrong with some people.

Okay, the winning goal, from the right replay other than the fact its a ridiculously powerfully hit shot, it swerves crazily right as the keeper moves to stop it, if that was a slower shot there might have been some time to react, they keep showing it in slow mo, you can't account or predict for that amount of movement. 5-10 goals a year will just take insane wicked swerve on the ball that can't be saved, its the same as if it hit a player and took a deflection right infront of him, in which case no one would complain.

4-4-2 for Spurs not working, had nothing to do with that, it was how unattacking Spurs were with a 4-4-2, Modric wasn't getting forward enough to support and despite the GAPING holes in our attack, especially as the ball frequently went down Spurs right, with Gibbs missing, with Song coming over way to far, what you needed was Bale killing himself to get in the box, with Modric and Defo all in there aswell, but that only happened once really and they scored, pretty simple.

Spurs midfield just didn't play well enough, it had NOTHING to do with it being 4-4-2, not least because Sandro was a mad man when he came on, running all over the shop, and getting forwards loads, THAT was the difference, Spurs were far MORE attacking after the changes, not less.

Arsenal played well, better attacking? Rubbish, we walked up to their box, then did nothing, the goal was from an insane lapse by Spurs, Kaboul was standing where Ramsey scored, and decided to move to the other side of the goal where Spurs players were standing en masse, they could all see Ramsey and a couple other players and they moved away. likewise all the spurs players 4-5 on the left wing failed in any way to follow Arsenal as the game spread to the other wing they stood still watching, it was hilariously bad.

Arsenal had chances, but with Theo, Gervinho and RVP being man marked out of any real chances, we had no threat, at no time, despite all the posession, did I feel like Arsenal would score. The repeatedly counters by Spurs, which broke down, still all felt far more dangerous because they only had 1-2 duff defenders to beat, Arsenal's slow attacks had to go through the entire spurs team.

What do you do with VDV< useless but occasionally scores a great goal for a huge huge wage...... you get someone who can score great goals, on a huge wage, thats great at everything else aswell. Why is it always either one or the other, plenty of players can do it all. Why Utd comprimise with Carrick and Fletcher, or ANderson when theres loads of players better in their positions who would also be cheap I don't know. VDV always gets shoved out of a club, because ultimately he's not a great all around player and doesn't fill any single role in the team. Nasri the same, useless against bayern, while Young will get as many assists, more goals AND stand up in a game like that and be great defensively.

Nasri, VDV< these guys who aren't strikers and aren't midfielders, just want to do the easy selfish stuff inbetween with the odd goal, rarely end up staying at clubs for long.

Arsenal have confirmed that Sagna has broken his fibula and will be out for 3 months. No point signing Hibbert in January if it's just 3 months :p

3 months sounds a tad optimistic to me anyway.

It didn't look good, at first I thought he hurt his knee with a hard whack on the boards but the replay, his ankle goes one way then gets trapped and I'm 99% sure thats when his bone gave way, looked horrible, but it didn't look anywhere near as bad as something like Ramsey's break. I think it could have been a lot worse, but it is Arsenal so 3 months will turn into 6, at least.

Yay for selling off all our cover and buying a cheap very young player with basically no experience as cover, wooo.

We've now got two left backs who can't defend, or even find the left back position to save their lives, and a single right back, I give it maybe 3 weeks before Jenks gets injured aswell :(

I watched the the Spudsarse match yesterday, and in real time that winning goal was hit like a thunderbolt, and it was through a group of players, AND the keeper still got his fingers to it.

Arsenal as a whole were poor, Spurs as a whole were only very slightly better.

Arsene needs to drop Mertesaker as he is pure 100% dog**** and get one of his defenders who are simply just rubbish in there because he is going to cost them countless points across the season.

Football fans reached a new low yesterday.

Reports of Arsenal fans chanting to Adebayor that he should have died in the Togo team bus shooting in Angola.

Shame on them.

Didn't hear or know about this until I read it it the paper. As shameful as it is, the press are just as bad for making it an issue otherwise i doubt many would have notice.

back on to the Football, is it me that although despite scoring, VDV is a weak link in the Spurs side. We played much better when Sando came on. He always seems to drift in and out and volatile at most times. Pretty disgusting to see a junior player such as Bale pull a senior player away from the crowd to prevent a possible sending off. Good to see 12 points from 12 in the bag!

I didn't hear it either but what I did hear was the abuse that Wenger got. It makes me embarrassed to be a Spurs fan. There's so many legitimate and funnier ways to mock Wenger.

Absolutely..

Personally, from a Spurs fan, I think it's a dreadful shame that after 15 years of the success he has had that he and the fans have put so much pressure on the situation. Arsenal have been fortunate to have had 20 years of solid consistent performances which we can can only envy. Their downturn will be overturned for sure but only from the backing of the manager from supporters and board. No one team has a right to success.. it must be earned. I feel that Arsenal and Arsenal supporters may have had a reality check recently that nothing should be taken for granted.. This isn't a bad thing and I'm sure this time next year things will be very different.

That said, I still find it mildly amusing that he hasn't been banned from having water bottles at the side line. We have to remove the lids when we enter the ground :p

That's a great shame.. Wish him a speedy recovery. Was nasty.

Shame to hear about that happening at the Arsenal game.

The media should ignore them instead of giving them any sort of platform!

Wish Sagna a quick recovery too, maybe keeping Eboue was a good idea Arsenal fans :p

having king back is a big part of our run but as much as i wouldn't say i'm redknapps biggest fan, friedel, parker and adebayor have really given us what we have been missing for ages; friedel with his experience and personality, did you see him before kick off in the tunnel? he's just purely enjoying his time in the game, parker put in 150% work rate and adebayor is twice as effective as crouch ever was.

vdv is a problem though, out of position, low work rate. sandro was a massive step up in game play terms. not sure what we can do with vdv tbh.

4 goals in 3 games against Arsenal. As a manager, you've got to play Van der Vaart despite all of his faults.

Having said that, words alone cannot describe my love for Sandro. I'd love to see him get an extended run in the team. He was magnificent when he came on.

There is only one position VDV can play and that is as a supporting striker. So Harry either drops Defoe, and plays VDV or uses him as a sub. Personally I would start VDV as he can only last for 60 minutes and Defoe would be a good impact sub.

VDV is useless as a right midfielder. Harry is trying to accommodate him because of his perceived importance. He is unfit, or maybe just lazy, and will always come into to centre midfield when we have possession, so we lose our shape. He is too slow to track back, and was at fault for Arsenals goal.

While VDV still has his moments, Lennon would be my choice, or Kranjar when he is back fit.

he's got goals in him, no doubt but we play a different set up with him in the start up and i doubt he will ever play a full 90 minutes again. i know he scored, but sandro should have started this game though with lennon injured, i'm not sure whether he would've been his most effective on the wing but vdv essentially was the source of our faults for the second goal. vdv is a luxury we should only use against lesser teams imo certainly from a starting the game pov. i like the bloke but he does cause us problems in terms of formation when selected.

Best spurs team imo would be

-------------Friedel
Walker - Kaboul - King - BAE
-----Parker------Sandro
Lenon ----Modric -----Bale
---------VDV
-------------adebayor

Can replace kaboul with Dawson when hes fit but both as good as each other imo.

But im not 'Arry "Twitching" Redknapp.

Good win yesterday, but we where far from our best, VDV on the wing is rubbish....just plain bad.
Handball? 50/50 lucky to get away with it? sure, but football is a game of what ifs sometimes, and this time it went our way, plenty of times in the past it has gone the goons way and not ours so some you get some you dont.

Thought the young guy for Arsenal in the middle did well, Arteta was not up to much im afraid, and I liked him at Everton.

The German CB was crap, He really was slow and lumbering and got his positioning all wrong for 90 minutes. Chezney (sp?) was a bit unlucky, made some great saves but the walker ball he should have been behind the ball a tad more, he seemed slow to get down.

Oh also Gervinho what is he? he isnt a giner or a striker he just seems to be able to run with the ball for short periods of time befoe becoming rubbish?

Seen some people saying BAE was malicious with his jump into Sagna, I dont think so atall, its the NLD, there are going to be some harsh tackles but that wasnt one, he just went for the header imo.

Positives? We beat Arsenal and Wenger again becomes a parody of himself in the interview. King made it through and has time to rest for the next game, Walker was great again, excited by him. Parker was brilliant and just what we have needed for years! Typical that was we get him Sandro comes in and will replace him I have no doubt, That boy is going to be quality.

Negatives...Modric wasnt as good as he could be, but the formation limited him, we conceded a soft goal because VDV didnt defend atall!

All in all a good NLD, now to finish above Arsenal, get rid of st tottinghams day this year atleast, get 4th....win the Europa league....and get rid of Redknapp in the summer. Lovely.....I can dream cant I?

My problem with VDV is 1. His positioning appears to have an undesirable impact Modric and 2. He's to much of a liability. Sandro is magnificent to say the least. We're certainly not short of decent midfielder for sure but we now have the ability to break down attacks and hold the ball much more effectively. That's shown ion recent games. Or test is against Newcastle in a few weeks.. They are the team to keep an eye on and may well be top 4 competitors.

Yep.. but this has been there there since I've been watching football.. Things are a lot better than they once were. It's never ever going to stop but intead treat it as just ignorance.. which it is.

Injury list growing for Arsenal (bbc):

•Thomas Vermaelen (centre-back)
•Johan Djourou (centre-back)
•Sebastien Squillaci (centre-back)
•Laurent Koscielny (centre-back)
•Bacary Sagna (right-back)
•Jack Wilshere (central midfielder)
•Abou Diaby (central midfielder)

Sagna is very significant. Are there any loan player he can pull back?
