Honestly what on earth? His game was power, pace(ish) and determination. He was never hugely skillful and certainly not a brilliant play maker nor defensively solid. He ran a lot and scored goals, that was it. If you lose those parts of your game and your passing, control and brain all get worse, how does that make you suitable for midfield? Midfield isn't where crap strikers go to end careers, it's where players with very different strengths, ones Rooney never had, play.

He's worse in midfield than upfront, the same as he would be worse in midfield than upfront 10 years ago. He's also not good enough to be on the bench. He was good enough for the bench, but not to start, 2 years ago, for the past year he hasn't been good enough for the bench.

United don't miss him and for a captain and player on £300k a week that's pretty damning, coming on after the hour fresh legged when the opposition are tired is about right for him.
