Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [3rd - 5th October 2014]

Man Utd seem to be finding their feet at least. 4th isn't too bad.

If you looked at the run of fixtures at the start of the season up until Chelsea at the end of the month you would have expected them to be in the top 4. Even as bad as moyes made them with the players bought I didn't expect them to lose a game until maybe Everton.

They have had a great run of fixtures and even Everton are not the same team as last year. Still I suppose this time last year they had 10 points and they now have 11 despite a far easier start to the season, so as well as the style and an extra 200m spent that extra point is progress ;)

Another transfer window and I think they will become a really dangerous team again.

I put a bet on utd to take the title. 16.5/1... Not really much of a chance, but I thought it was worth a couple quid!

Action replay of the week...

The missing voice-over...

There was a point of this match when Arsène Wenger seemed to have gone into Begbie-from-Trainspotting mode and was squaring up to José Mourinho by the side of the pitch, as if someone had spilled his pint one time too many. Wenger had already shoved his bete noire in the chest and when he went back to prolong the argument the Arsenal manager briefly pushed his face towards his old adversary so they were almost nose to nose. Those were the lingering images of a sometimes wild game when, once again, Mourinho came out on top and everyone could see exactly how far he has got under Wenger’s skin.

Maybe the FA should introduce points for manger interaction.

Any more news on Courtois?

Update from the club this afternoon:

Chelsea Football Club can confirm Thibaut Courtois went to hospital during our Premier League game against Arsenal yesterday [Sunday] for precautionary tests on a head injury. Those tests came back all clear.

Thibaut was treated for a minor cut to his ear and was released from hospital last night. He is expected to report for international duty later this week.

At the end of the season we should re-visit this post.
It will be interesting to see where they finish.

If they can steam-roll teams after xmas, then its quite possible for them to put a good points total, which (normally) would win the title.
The problem this year is Mourinho - I hope he fired quickly, otherwise, Chelsea could win the title for the next few years in a row.

To this day, it baffles me that Man Utd chose Moyes over Mourinho. Does anybody know what the thinking behind this was, because I still havent worked it out and the Man Utd board has never explained this?

Pretty much the fact that Mourinho had all but agreed to join Chelsea long before Fergie was set on retiring

They didn't chose Moyes over Mourinho, some Man.U. fans just assume that they can get whoever they want and if someone doesn't join them then it must've been the Club's choice, they don't seem to realise that there are always 2 parties involved and not everyone wants to sign for them.
As he's stated many times, when the opportunity came to re-join Chelsea he didn't want to go anywhere else.

Considering Fergie hasn't rubbished his claims about telling him he wanted to go back to Chelsea before he was committed there's no reason to believe otherwise.

Why would he?

Whether JM wanted to go to Chelsea or any other club, who knows but the idea that it must be true because he said so is ridiculous. Once he's taken the Chelsea job he's never going to say anything other than Chelsea was his first choice. It's no different than Utd saying Moyes was their first choice; they were never going to say we settled for him after missing out on x y and z.

I generally tend to believe things like this when people actually say them so often, that's not just JM but any manager.
In this case no-one has said anything to the contrary and there is literally no factual evidence at all that JM was ever interested in taking the Man.U. job at the time yet some Man.U. fans still think their Club chose not to employ him, again without any factual evidence. Ask Frank ;)
