Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [3rd - 5th October 2014]

Fans the boo players like him are just idiots.

AFAIK there is apparently are fans up and down the leagues who are letting off smoke bombs in/around stadiums. I believe the game was delayed because some Arsenal fans(afaik) let off smoke bombs in the concourse area. I guess made them stop letting people in for a while to let smoke clear and make sure it wasn't a fire.

The story I read saying this says it's been happening all over but at least in the media seems to have been quiet or I just completely missed it. It wouldn't surprise me if it's the kind of things BBC/papers are encouraged not to print as headline stories for fear it will encourage even more fans to do it.

Fabregas, MOTM, big match player, brilliant player, class above anything Arsenal have. Wenger thinks Ozil is that level, he's not, worse still is Ozil from what he says believes he's that level.

You see guys like Messi/Ronaldo maybe giving interviews where they are never happy, they always believe they can improve, they think they can do better. Ozil gives an interview saying he's happy with his performances, he has nothing to prove, he's a world champion so he knows how good he is. The best players try to prove to themselves they are the best every game.

EDIT:- Ronaldo scored again, 11 for the season, well 11 in the league, 15th for the season(2 super cup 2 UCL).

'Nothing to worry about' if you have a ridiculous attitude towards head injuries/concussions. If he and his medical staff are responsible people, he'll look at and be aware of the issues surrounding repeated head injuries/concussions (especially the research done in the US because of concussion and the NFL).

It is something to worry about going forward, and it's actually disgusting he was allowed to continue playing today (so it's something to worry about right now, because their procedures are obviously flawed) - second impact syndrome is a real thing... and that leads to deaths/severely negative neurological outcomes :\.

I'm sure Chelsea employ Doctors who are specialists, Moses and they tell Jose...there is nothing to worry about.

What's he going to say? 'Oh yeah, my doctors were negligent. Lolocaust'? Of course he's going to say it's all okay.

It's disgusting he was allowed to continue, and fans should tell the club that if they care about the welfare of the players they support,

It's ridiculous it may take a death for the sport to take head injuries seriously :|.

Most cases of SIS have occurred in young people, who are thought to be particularly vulnerable. In order to prevent SIS, guidelines have been established to prohibit athletes from returning to a game prematurely. For example, professionals recommend that athletes not return to play before symptoms of an initial head injury have resolved.[citation needed]

Due to the very small number of recorded cases of SIS, there is doubt about whether it is a valid diagnosis. However, the syndrome is recognized by physicians

Firstly you're linking to something that says it's exceptionally rare and unknown, it affects younger people more and it recommends not returning to play before initial head injury have resolved. Not every head hit results in concussion and in general concussion takes several minutes to show. Many people have got up after a knock and been fine, very VERY few people aren't fine. You're talking about it like it's common(it's absolutely NOT common), like it's happened loads of times before in sport, and like they are dealing with it incorrectly.

The massive majority of head injuries come in massively more violent sports than football, and in most of them the situation of injuries is lifelong repeated hits, multiple, even dozens of concussions like in american football and even then the SIS numbers are miniscule, in boxing the numbers are miniscule.

Long term effects of repeated concussion is something to take exceptionally seriously, mostly because team doctors have been pushing players to play injured or even lying and telling them they are fine because managers need that player to play. That isn't what is happening here, you can't diagnose a symptom until there is one/some.

Football is not American football, or boxing, it doesn't have a serious problem with repeat concussions and no managers are out there asking guys with bad concussions to go in and smash into each other head first over and over again.

The biggest issue with head injuries in all sports is as above returning to playing and potentially getting another head injury before the first one has fully healed. Where players need protecting is having concussions diagnosed properly and having a sensible and non rushed period of recovery before being allowed to play again. Presuming an exceptionally rare injury before you can see symptoms is ridiculous. Someone is tackled badly they hold their leg in pain, better sub them and take them to the hospital just incase there is a hairline fracture before they get hit again and it becomes a compound fracture, even if the leg shows no pain and the player has no issue playing on?

Dealing with diagnosed injuries correctly is important, diagnosing injuries correctly is important, assuming a diagnosis before symptoms have developed is nothing short of stupid.

What are the chances of anyone at Chelsea having a ridiculous attitude to head injuries after Cech got his head kicked in?
He said that after he was advised by medical staff as to his condition.

Oh god Tummy's here.

Cech had his head caved in a collision with a player who may or may not have went for him, better?

Cech put his head in the way of Hunt's knee ;).

The phrase 'head kicked in' just conjures the wrong image, a false image, it was a horrible collision, but is not all together uncommon with goalkeepers who rush out. It was unfortunate that it happened (obviously) but there was no intent, very similar incidents have happened pre and post.

I thought Courtois would have to go off straight away; surprised he was left on.

Is there any actual update on Courtois? Sky Sports said him being taken to hospital was just precautionary.

It's refreshing to hear that there was no intent.
His right knee may disagree with you on that though but hey you know what was going through his mind so that'll do for me, videos show a rather more inconclusive scenario though but I trust your insight.

Just Tummy will suffice. Hello JohnnyG.

Notice the use of lower case in god.

Ah, typical. Football is tribal after all.

Ronaldo just got another hat trick, 3 hat tricks in 4.

It's not just second impact syndrome - that's the extreme manifestation, obviously. There's also a significant body of research regarding head injuries leading to increased chances of developing brain disorders, and so forth (hence why I referenced the NFL) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concussions_in_American_football#Federal_NFL_Concussion_Litigation etc, etc.

When people are obviously knocked out/incredibly groggy, it's obvious they've suffered head trauma and should be taken off as a precaution. Who was the jelly legged guy in the World Cup? Uruguyan maybe? I forget. Then Mascherano, or the German lad in the final. Or Lloris as a Premier League example.

Hence if you read my post I specifically addressed it. NFL's issue isn't SIS but playing guys with known concussions in games before they have recovered, on purpose, because they are money grabbing idiots.

In the NFL players are subjected to a strict concussion protocol on the sidelines and are removed from the game if they show any symptoms.

Their treatment of concussions has changed, but is sensible, they don't arbitrarily remove anyone who has taken a knock but will remove and check out people once they show symtoms. Though it's the changes in how concussed players are clear to play again that will make the big difference to the sport in the future.

AFAIK Masch, someone else and Kramer in the final all took fairly nasty looking knocks, all three played on, Kramer proceeded to develop symptoms after 10-15 mins and as soon as he did he was removed. No one pressured him to stay on, there were just no symptoms, you have insane horrible concussions/knock outs, I can't remember a player staying on, but again the real danger is rushing them back like the NFL did, that was never a problem in football here. The others are smaller concussions that take time to show symptoms, you can't randomly remove players without symptoms because as said, someone who takes a big knock on his leg where you've seen other peoples leg break in such a tackle, you can't just sub them just incase they have a broken leg there isn't symptoms of yet, it's ridiculous.

Concussions are handled well and safely and appropriately. The media is trying to blow it out of all proportion and suggesting pre-emptive treatment for something they haven't confirmed is actually a problem.

Repeat concussions is an incredibly dangerous situation for anyone, athlete or not, but football doesn't have an excessively high risk of concussion nor a dangerous attitude to treatment, a culture of hiding and forcing players to play with concussion. That is what the issue was with the NFL the culture of hiding and just playing concussed players again and again, getting more concussions, literally causing brain damage. That culture simply isn't present in football, at all.

Does anyone know the genuine reason the game was delayed today?
I heard rumours in the stands but they were of course just that.

Arsenal fans causing trouble on the way in, some with flares. There were also a few sat on by the police on the way out.
