Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [3rd - 5th October 2014]

Get in. Well managed game by Brendan maybe bar keeping Sterling on but perhaps his pace always worth it.

**** Michael Oliver

Yep.

Solid game for Steve too, tracked back well the majority of the time and made important interceptions/headers in the box as well as general pressure, particularly since its his third in a week :cool. Perhaps he knew he'd be shifted up with twenty to go, either way an improvement.

Although we did just play WBA to be fair, but **** it, football has been brutal recently

Another point, more time with Pardew :(

It's the worst result we could have gotten today, and now we'll hear the good old 'they've turned a corner' line from all the wonderfully knowledgeable pundits that grace our screens.

I have a strange feeling that if we do ever win again Mike will give him the chop. Based on absolutely nothing but hope.

Another patchy performance. WBA looked a threat on the break without ever creating any real chances and like in midweek we continued to find ways to mess up our own attacks.

Terrible decision by the ref for their pen, which was clearly outside the area, and also for not awarding the pen for the foul on Sterling just before our 2nd but thankfully it didn't cost us today.
You certainly miss Sturridge. I'm sure it will be a completely different scenario when he's back.

That's part of it but it's not the whole reason. Pre-season Rodgers said that we wouldn't see mass changes from the side last season and that he wanted to ease the new players in. With the injuries to Sturridge, Allen, Coutinho (briefly), Johnson and Flanagan we've had no choice but to throw nearly all our new signings straight into the side and it shows. The disorganisation at the back is 1 thing but the bigger concern for me has been the lack of understanding in attack. Hopefully that's starting to improve and with most of our injured players nearly back we'll start to look like a side again.

Moreno's hit the ground running, Manquillo looks quite good and after missing most of preseason Lallana's starting to look very good but Lovren really concerns me. His decision making is extremely poor and we've now got two last ditch tacklers at the back. I thought he was brought in to offer some composure at the back but we he's offering anything but composure.

It's strange as he was so composed and solid and rarely made a mistake at Southampton. You wonder how much Skrtel and Mignolet have on his confidence? Still as bad that pairing there is no way Sakho and Toure should anywhere near the first team. Didn't you spend a load on some Portuguese based CB a while back?

Illori? It was a relatively modest fee (£2-3m rising to £6-7m depending on success) and he's been loaned out. Whether the club think he's going to make it or whether it was more of an investment I'm not too sure.

I think the leadership stuff has gone to his head and he's trying to do everything. He's slowly getting better but even today he went for a header in the first half that was never there to win and left their CF free.

In theory the pairing of Skrtel and Lovren should work. Lovren naturally defends on the front foot and Skrtel is very good defending on the cover. They just need to build up an understanding and although Lovren will be the one that attacks most things, he's got to know when it's just not possible to win.

Mignolet was better today. He was more commanding and willing to come off his line. Whether that continues or whether in the next game he goes back to being glued on his line again is anyone's guess though.

Not really sure why Sakho gets picked out Andy yet Skrtel and Lovren both get away with making errors every game. Sakho looks extremely clumsy on the ball but his passing and tackling stats don't lie and he's the strongest CB we've got.

Lovren doesn't hold his position and dives in far too often. Not a great combination for a defence that already has problems keeping clean sheets but I agree/hope it's because he's trying to impress as you say Baz.

Was the Boro game the last Sakho played? He looks very suspect that game against a Champ side (again!)

Both Sakho and Skrtel (and Agger for that matter) want to be the covering CB. We saw time and again how we struggled against big centre forwards in recent years because we've had nobody that wants to go and challenge them. Lovren will do that, it's just a case of fine tuning his decision making.

Generally speaking Pigeon's spot on. He looks a lot more clumsy that he actually is and he tends to be pretty effective. He was abysmal vs Boro though.
