Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [4 - 8th May 2013]

Listening to 5 Live and they're talking about who United could or should sign next season.

Yet again Bale crops up as the lead player to sign for them. I just can't get over the way pundits talk about the guy. The way they seem to just assume its a foregone conclusion that Spurs would sell to them, or even that Spurs feel they're in a position where they feel they need to sell him.

They all seem to overlook the fact he's still got 3-4 years on his contract in addition to the way the guy just loves to play no matter what. If Spurs said to him "you're staying for another 2 seasons at least, we'll see about amending the contract so you can move on after that", there's sod all he could do about it and would just have to continue playing.

And anyway, I think it's more likely United will get Ronnie back and then Real will want to come and try and pry Bale away from Spurs then. Which Spurs would rather, as who wants to sell their best player to a domestic rival unless they have to?

If Bale see's out his contract, then Spurs get £0mil in transfer fee's, if he goes now, at the peak of his hype, maybe they get £50mil from some idiot... can't see any reason why people think Spurs might sell.

Successful clubs sell when the price outweighs keeping the player. Bale isn't worth 50mil, he's not Ronaldo, who had 3-4 excellent seasons in a row before leaving for a huge fee and has been better since. This is, remember, Bale's FIRST high scoring season, not the 4th, or 2nd even, but first. He could score 8 goals next season and never break 10 in another season in his career, good chance getting 30mil + if he ends up being seen as a one season wonder.

Spurs aren't really a rival for United though, more of a feeder club :p

Fergie said in the program notes its 10 games

"The likes of Anderson and Cleverly haven't played for a while and 10 appearances guarantees them a [championship] medal. It also puts freshness in the team. Phil Jones has not had a lot of football and has done terrificly when he's in the team. I expect us to express ourselves really well"
