Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [5th - 6th November 2011]

How many changes did you make then?

I've only just read Megson's comments as I didn't hear them after the game.

It's defeatist and negative to go in to a game and not look to win, League One being what is it any team can beat any team. Look at what Stevenage have done at times this season.

Same applies to the Championship.

I hate to say this, but having watched Stevanage beat us 1-0 a couple of weeks ago, they were the most defensive, time-wasting team I've seen in years. They've arguably got the best mentality and team spirit in the league this year, and when you have a team like that that works so hard for each other, and defends incredibly capably, then you're of course going to win a few!

They battered us and did Charlton over.

I'd certainly agree with going in to games not to lose, but I don't think it's any way to be a succesful (being relative) side in the Championship or League One.

I'd certainly agree that teams in top Leagues and in Europe go in to games to defend, but not in lower leagues were there is a blur in quality across the league.

Team in our last away game:

Lee; O'Connor, Osborne, Llera, Woodman; Bean, Douglas, Diagouraga; McGinn (sub Wood 80 mins), Donaldson, Adams (sub Saunders 69 mins)

Team against you:

Lee; O'Connor, Eger, Llera, Woodman; McGinn (sub Grella 86 mins), Douglas, Diagouraga, Saunders (sub Weston 73 mins); Alexander (sub Bean 79 mins), Donaldson

Eger played against you as Osborne is injured. Alexander played for Bean as he was returning from injury (arguably Bean is much more defensive!).

Same core of the team I suppose. I can only agree that we changed our team formation and line up quite differently from the previous home game, but that team would have got beat 4-0 against you lot due to injuries, etc. and half of them being about 15 years old!

Jonathan Douglas - ex-Leeds, Blackburn and Swindon.

Mike Grella being ex-Leeds too

First game that Grella started for us and our manager had been under pressure to give him a run out as he'd spent 6 weeks getting 5 mins at the end of each game. He actually played incredibly well... and was then dropped!

Thought so. Douglas was decent for us, never worked out though. Anther ex Leeds to score past us when he went to Swindon :(

Grella when we got him looked a prospect, looks really quick and could take a player on, never got given a chance other than League Cup and sub appearances, he was too light weight really. I think he's distruptive behind the scenes though, he went on loan somewhere from Leeds and was sent back to leeds after a month or so, the manager didn't say why but he wasn't happy, think Grella think's he's better than he actually is.

Ironically it looks as if Grella has swapped round. Not overly quick (even by League One standards) and has padded out somewhat :p Rumour has it you guys very happily let him go for free as he was working his way through the player's wives and girlfriends - unsubstantiated rumours though! :D

Douglas is class, one of those trusty CMs that you never really notice during a game as he gets so little wrong.

Haha yeah he seems like a ladies man. He went out to Swindon for a bit last season and threw his toys out the pram, remember thinking "Urgh, what a tool! Hope we never sign players like that...". I do remember seeing him score an unbelievable goal for you lot though, and have seen him put a few in for the reserves since he joined.

Saying that, with Keogh, McCormack, Snodgrass, etc. you're really not missing much with Grella!

There's been worrying talk/gossip about Paynter joining us on loan. Am genuinely terrified about this happening. I don't think our squad can take getting any slower! :D

Thank God for that! Never really rated him above L2 level despite the odd good season.

Jeez... Brighton must be desperate!

Aww, I missed Tummy on the rag.

Apparently Pearson might be out of Hull back to Leicester. Gutted for Hull, they were really starting to click under him.

Hmm Pearson's Hull, defensively solid but masters of smash and grab and poor football in my experience, gets the job done though. The job at Hull is perfectly for Billy Davies except for the glaring fact Adam Pearson is on the board :p

I get that they started off fairly defensively, but they opened up a bit more recently. It's just that they're crying out for somebody to actually finish the chances they make. In the West Ham game, for instance, they had 14 shots on goal and yet lost 2-0.

How solid City are now blinds people to what a shambles they were when they went down. Pearson's managed to get rid of all the over-paid egos (Bullard et al) whilst bringing in some hungry young talent (admittedly mostly via the Man Utd youth system :p), and generally stabilising the whole setup.

Yeah, I've heard Davies time at Derby didn't end too well. No idea who they'll get in, but the usual suspects list (McLaren, Megson) is always worrying.
