Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 12th December 2011]

Have to give City credit though, Chelsea never looked like scoring in that second half despite having the man advantage. There was a lot of side to side stuff in front of the box but little in the way of actual danger.

Cheers :) Hurt a bit to give it up to a penalty tbh, think we could have eventually seen that out with ten.

In all fairness, for large parts of the second half it was hard to tell that Chelsea were playing against ten men. City coped well, though they clearly lost their attacking threat after the sending off. What really winds me up is seeing comments on the BBC live feed from City fans saying things like 'the ref let us down tonight'. City were lucky to have only one man sent off, and I'm not convinced that was a penalty on Silva. Yes there was contact, but he went down unbelievably easily. All in all, I'd say Chelsea deserved the result, and it's great for the prem.

^It should really come as no surprise that Lescott is going to cost you in the real close games, he's not good enough for a side chasing the title. Don't know what he was thinking going in like that.

Mate that was more of a penalty then modric dive yesterday

I think that penalty, while being a penalty, would have been pretty soft to give.

The way he made it look as if he'd been shot-gunned in the knee caps probably didn't help his cause either.

I didn't see the Spurs game, but yeah I heard it was a soft one. I just got annoyed watching some of City's antics tonight, it reminded me of Real Madrid at the weekend. Fouling players (Yaya Toure was particularly guilty of this) and going down very easily (Balotelli). I like the prem to be physical and competitive, without going ott. I know United aren't exactly saints either, but I thought City's sportsmanship was poor at times tonight.

If Gary Neville says its stonewall, it's stonewall :P but there's no point crying about it. We're still top, and the only 'top' team we have left to play away from home is Arsenal, which on reflection is still a pretty strong position to be in. Says a lot about where we've come when at the end the Chelsea players are that bloomin' happy about beating little old us :D Was only last season we were parking the bus against them!

How would have been soft? the fall was theatrical but he clearly whacked him on the knee. And Meireles should have gone just after scoring his goal, how he got away with the first one is beyond belief. But screw you Clichy and Lescott, you lost me my last bet of the weekend with your stupidity even if it was a good result for the league.

I thought it was a bit embarrassing for them that they were acting like they'd just won the league. :o

how does barry get into the city start up? it could just be me but i didn't see him do anything. take silva out of city's play and that's a large part of the battle won.

i don't understand with villas-boas took mata off either, he's a joy to watch and chelsea's best player imo but credit where it's due, they won.

You dont deserve to be fighting for titles. your club diddnt esablish itself as a power house from the bottom like liverpool, arsenal and united. you freaking bought your way into the top level. undeserved.

Oh Christ are you still here? Have enough people not already told you to go away?

Now don't think I'm joking :p but Barry has been immense for us this season. Dropping De Jong and having a mid two of him and Yaya is a huge reason we've been able to score so many goals. I know the old 'he does a thankless task' thing is a bit of a cliché, but he has been superb. Same with Clichy, he's been one of the best left backs in the league, he's just had a very, very off night. My only concern is playing against teams that counter attack, we could probably do with someone faster than Barry in the centre, but that would be a slight criticism and frankly not enough to remove him from the starting line up given his performances so far.

Despite that result, it's still a big ask for any team to beat City. Although City had a tough game tonight and have another tough one against Arsenal next weekend, United still have to play most of the big teams away, so I think the momentum is still with City. Having said that, with Yaya Toure going to the African Cup of Nations, and the busy Christmas fixture list coming up that could potentially result in injuries, it's going to make things interesting.

edit: I think Barry is ****, I really do think he's the most over-rated DM in the prem. I hate it when he plays for England too.

As much as I dislike how much money they have spent, they are top of the league without breaking any rules, so therefore deserve to be fighting for the title.

Yea its a big ask. Unless your barcelona, you cant really match a team that buys there way to success im afraid.

*pats head*

At the end of the day it was Clattenberg that cost us the match, we played well before the sending off and would have held out i think even with 10 men if Clattenberg wasn't hell bent on doing one better than Atwell.

Shows how far we have come when Chelsea fans celebrate like the PL has just landed after they get a narrow victory against a 10 man team and were very lucky to do so.
