Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 12th December 2011]

Well City is City they can afford it, our 30m third choice striker is at an age where we'd be lucky to get half the fee back now whereas because of Carrolls age if he was relegated to being third choice you could still probably get 16-20m back for him even say in 2 years time and not many clubs would want that amount of talent only playing Carling Cup ties

All that being said apart from what the fans want is there any indication that Liverpool will be in the market for another striker in the near future?

I'm still not sure what the issue is with us having more than 2 high profile or expensive strikers in our squad. We don't even know who we might sign (if anybody at all) and we're already talking about Carroll just playing Carling Cup games :/

Why can't we have 3 high profile players competing for 2 spots (or realistically 2 competing for 1 spot if we assume Suarez is a certain starter)?

As for whether there's any indication that we'll sign another striker. Dalglish and the club say little to nothing so there's not likely to be any indication however as I said, we've only got 2 recognised strikers + Kuyt & Bellamy (who are also relied on to play/cover the wide positions) so I'd expect we'll be in the market for a striker.

No disrespect to Carroll - but he was bought at the peak of the market (playing well for his current side, Jan window meaning lots of strikers were unavailable, thereby raising the price - not to mention window was closing fast I seem to recall)

He was probably a £25m striker on ability (maybe upto £30m) with the other £5-10m being because Liverpool didnt ahve much choice (and still made profit from Torres)

So I would say its fair to say that Carroll now is probably worth only £15m or so (not so prolific, not playing as regularly (is that injury related or purely from form/fitting with the team, and therefore not so important to his current team as he was). In a year's time it could be less, or if form improves it could be more....

for the record if Utd do sell Berba, I think they would be lucky to get £10m from him, and it would probably be less.

You honestly rate Carrol as 25m?

His performances merited it at the point he joined Liverpool (and given the standard English player being transfered between EPL clubs "tax") , yes I think thats a reasonable fee

Now , no of course not

edit - unless you find a player like Hernandez totally off the radar of every other club, - doesnt everyone think that the same quality of player is costing a lot more in general than 5 - 10 years ago? (Ie market is getting more expensive for all types of players)

FT 4-1 at Old Trafford. Decent if not amazing performance, Rooney and Nani were excellent.

Think thats a little harsh - compared to the last few weeks (or months) , the performance was Excellent!!!

Apart from Rooney and Nani, Jones and I thought Valencia did very well indeed

Disappointing Evra didnt get off the ground really, and their goal seemed to go right over Jonny Evans' head (I think it was JE anyway on the goal line)

It was only Wolves, but as (I think) Tom mentioned before the match, Wolves always seem to make it difficult for Utd, and reallly glad Wayne and Nani have found their shooting boots again - unfortunate it wasnt 6 or 7 - 1

Everton got what they deserved yesterday, with the score at 0-0 after an hour Moyes took off his lone striker and put on a centreback, negativity of the highest order. I can understand not chasing the game but going for a 5-5-0 formation with half an hour to go is quite sad.

Lol, nice try, but nothing has changed but the results. Your main source of excitement from what I can tell isn't anything to do with Wenger at all, it's staying in the Champions League whilst City and United haven't. I'm sure after a run of a few draws or losses Wenger will be clueless again and need showing the door.

No. We have only lost twice for the past 12-13 games now. one against spurs and the other in our final champions league group game.

we also stuffed chelsea at stamford bridge and we have grinded out a few results left right and centre and keeping a few cleansheets.

Our defence has improved a tiny bit but whats changed is the attitude of the players. hardly any of our players are lazy and dont try. We use to have a lazy denilson, diaby, Aluminia and a lazy ashavin in our starting 11 but now we dont. we have players that care and trying there best.

Look at walcott. he is playing very good lately. Ramsey is doing a good job and we have Verhmalin back. We also have a top goalkeeper now. finally.

And song? Enough said about that guy. he has been immensed for arsenal this season. I wont even botehr emntioning RVP who IMO is currently the best striker in the league at the moment.

Blackburn 1-0 up at Sunderland.

Martin O'Neill looking through his contract for get out clauses. :p

EDIT: Sunderland waste a sitter.

Falling at the feet of a player who didn't expect the ball to reach him, didn't react first time and by the time he realised he had the ball and could shoot, Robinson was on his way down to smoother the shot, bog standard save.

It is hard to react when you absolutely expect something else to happen, but the best poachers make careers on that, had he tapped that in first time Robinson wouldn't of stood a chance. Horrific defending, how he failed to clear it I don't know.

You said possibly the best save you've ever seen, again I'll point out, RIchardson didn't for a second think the ball was coming to him, had he done so that would have been a shot first time, he got the shot away after a long delay(compared to shooting at first chance) and by the time he shot Robinson was already smothering it. It's not like Richardson made one of the best shots ever and Robinson managed to make his away across the entire goal to tip it past the bar. Someone directly in front of him had a poor shot and he blocked it, nothing more or less. It wasn't a bad save, but possibly the best I've ever seen, possibly the best I've seen....... in this match.

Blackburn have been pretty good so far, Samba in particular.

No idea how that was a 'foul' on Westwood though, he jumped straight into Samba!

Ok DM maybe not the best save ever but a very good save. :p

But it was point blank and Robinson won't have expected Richardson to get the ball either but will have had a second to prepare himself.

Why Sunderland insist on constantly crossing it in for Samba to clear I'l never know. I would have thought that for all the times they've been on the edge of the box they'd have tried to mix it up by drilling it in and hoping rather than clipping it in and hoping.

And lol and Sessegnons attempts on goal so far.

A good example there of how over-protected goalkeepers have become, Sunderlands keeper runs out into the back of a static Blackburn attacker, flaps at the ball and falls down without really making any effort and Blackburn have a goal disallowed.

lol, and that is one of the main reasons for Sunderland sucking this season Sesseggon or whatever has the ball, runs for 25 yards with a very good option to pass out wide but instead opts for what was closer to a back pass than a shot from 30-35yards, that was pathetic.

They give him the ball constantly and he's one of those guys that looks effective, but 98% of his end product is beyond awful.

You can't have a guy who can't hit the target, and refuses to pass as your main play maker, it would be like playing Heskey (or rooney :p ) as your play maker, honestly Sunderland could do worse than push Larrson into the middle, drop the useless twit and play someone else on the wing.
