Greta Thunberg

Dont judge her by your own standards.

Besides, being able to read the available facts, even as a lay person, and come to the conclusion is hardly rocket science.

I'm not sure why you seem to think that to understand something you have to have done the actual scientific research yourself, we wouldn't have got very far if everybody took that view.
But a layperson can't read an article and then "support" the findings therein by basically saying, "Yeah, sounds legit."

To "support" a position in any meaningful way you'd need to understand everything being discussed, and have some way to *verify* what you are reading.

The same reason we don't let laymen peer review scientific papers if they have no qualifications in the field. Such a peer review would be meaningless.

Are you saying that everything you know to be true you have a fundamental and detailed understanding of it and have peer reviewed every paper before you accept it?

So, air flight, for example, can you tell me when you peer reviewed every paper about aerodynamics, adhesives, communications and radar (just to start with) before you accepted the findings of experts?

Because if not, you dont know the plane will fly using your logic.

I read it that way too...there's a LOT of theories we leave for the experts to decide on whether they stand up to sufficient scrutiny, and then trust those individual's judgement to form our own opinions, in parts based on the credentials of said individual.

You're reading it wrong then.

I wouldn't peer review anything because I don't have an academic background.

So were I to "support" anything it would be meaningless. And that's what I'm saying about Greta. Any "support" she gives is as meaningless as it would be coming from me.

The people who should be peer review and supporting things are the experts in their fields. That what I was saying. Laypeople can't support theories or papers if they have no expertise in the subject matter. No qualifications.

Greta and the surrounding her organisations have money and influence to change things.
The point is to live sustainably and to leave a habitable planet to our children..

It's not though... delivering the message in this way (through a child being controlled/exploited because it plays well for the media) creates an impression of dishonesty where there shouldn't need to be one... People say "well nobody was listening to the actual Scientists so we need to do it this way" but I think actually this is turning just as many people off of the message because it feels like such a cheap tactic... Not to mention just sad to watch

People really hate on this girl

She engages young audiences but adults seem to get triggered. Is it because she's young? Dare I say it.. A girl (hopefully not)

Well, we will all get our comeuppance in time.

Just as covid had shown the world is slow and only reacts and reacts too late. So it will play out with climate change.

Only with climate change, their is absolutely no vaccine or 'let it run' option.

We are at stage where we need some yet to be realised technology to save us.
The world really is screwed. I do not envy kids of today. They are going to inherit a barren wasteland at this rate.

The crows are coming home to roost
We are incapable of fighting all this.

I kind of get deniers, they deny it, they are wrong, but I guess they are following their beliefs. I don't really get the people having kids who believe the world is heading for disaster.

If you believe that strongly, why the F would you want kids to inherit this?

For me it's the messianic status foisted upon her.
She's just regurgitating what experts have been saying forever. So why do we suddenly care just because she's saying it? When did she go from a literal nobody to someone whose voice matters so much and someone people think deserves a ******* nobel peace prize, and why?
I'm also absolutely convinced she's being exploited by her parents

Compare what she says (and how she says it) with what David Attenborough says (and how HE says it). The message is the same, the reaction from the audience completely different. She's preachy, unreasonable. Authoritarian. He's convincing and speaks from experience. Authoritative. It probably helps that he's built up decades of credibility in this area.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head there.

If you want to preach to the world that what they're doing is wrong, then you need the credentials and reputation to back that up. The credentials and reputation cannot be built by an activist who just promotes her beliefs on social platforms and talks at conferences. You need to get involved in various research projects for the credibility, drive innovation projects to build your reputation, all of which Attenborough has done during his life. The bloke is 94 years of age and is still working to try and get the message across.

Guess we might as well all just blow our brains out right now then? lol every single post from you is so dripping in negativity and the most extremely pessimistic doom-filled take on everything. Have you considered becoming a headline writer for the Sun or the Mail?

Ask yourself, which posters are upset about her?

And then correlate that list of people with those you typically find taking the bigoted position in threads.

This right here is exactly the aim Greta's handlers wanted to achieve... A spokesperson whose message is off limits to criticise because if you do it's very easy to conflate that with the person and label you ageist, sexist, ableist, a bigot etc. They're probably a little disappointed that she's white as it denies them the complete set that the race card would provide, but I guess they were keen to start pushing their agenda so they couldn't wait around for the perfect puppet

And I say that as someone who agrees with the message, and doesn't "hate" Greta - I feel bad for her. My worry is that eventually the continued lack of action, combined with constantly being praised as if she's making a difference, is going to take a heavy mental toll on her (as it would with anyone, let alone someone with a social condition that might make it harder to understand)

There isn't much to be positive about in the long term. You need to be in the moment for positive things now.

That's how I feel anyway.

No point putting your fingers in your ears and going la la la la. I'd love things to change . Pay more tax, take climate change seriously, cut population in a sustainable way. But I don't think it's going to happen.

I've made a few changes.
1 car household, - switched cat for an ebike
Only going abroad once per 2 years (yeah I know this could be better, aviation is terrible)
Picking up litter when I'm out and about.
Having heating off more.

I wish I could claim in my having kids because of environmental reasons. But I just don't like them

In moment I'm often actually happy.
i get out on my bike enoughh and explore.
I play games with friends
Have my weekly dnd sessions.

I just don't have anything positive on the future in a global way.

I think it's already happening. COVID is surely seeing to a population decrease, unless we get lots of "covid babies". I might be wrong. But population curves do level out naturally, and the theories are that ours will and we will then be on a downturn once we get to between 7-9 billion.

You switched your cat for an ebike? Much better carbon footprint!
