Greta Thunberg

Once the corrupt leaders in Africa allow China to buy up the place the Africans will have the shock of their lives. They'll be pleading for Ian Smith to be resurrected.
I'm not sure. They'll build infrastructure that's pretty much a given.

I don't see how making things worse for Africans is in China's self-interest. The question is whether they can make improvements that last. Europeans built infrastructure all those years ago and a lot of it has long since fallen into disrepair. Will it be the same story this time around?

Gotta love Ed Millibands r4pm summary of cop progress -
Boris, now on mission shift, to plan B (Reagan managed to escape his origins not Boris) moving the goal posts to - success equals deciding to meet again next year - when shall we meet again in flood, or rain ...
After Boris's drive-by speech now travelling back to London too.

China is currently trying to rob Africa of it's natural resouces as fast as possible.

Africa is how it is because of the people living there. They never got organised like the rest of the world (well, most of it) and they got left behind. Handing them technology and lots of money is a mistake. They should be left alone to develop and reach a natural balance by themselves as it's keeping them on never ending life support.

Yes, dumping it. Because in many cases it's easier and quicker to offload unwanted/damaged clothing to a charity shop than try to sell it or take it to a recycling centre.

Second, over the years we've been so bombarded by adverts showing naked starving African kids, so that many people think they're all wandering around naked and destitute.

That leads people to think they're doing them a favour by dumping some really worn-out, damaged clothing on charity shops. And then you hear people saying things like, "Beggars can't be choosers." I've heard that when throwing away some really frayed, stained, end-of-life garments. "Why don't you take them to the charity shop? People in Africa would love to wear that!" No, no they wouldn't.

In recent times charity shops have stopped taking the absolute crap, but as those videos above clearly show, it's still reaching Africa in vast quantities. And unsurprisingly they're having problems dealing with the extreme amounts of textile waste generated because these clothes are worthless and unwanted.
charity shop are recycling centres but the money goes to charity!

What's the down side again?

They may be naked but they have got an iPhone :D

Seychelles representative on r4 talking about ocean rise, coral death so loss of tourism -
has someone analysed carbon cost of people taking long haul flights to get there, in that respect it's a fait accompli ... and more flying taxes need to be imposed;

Boris reducing national taxes, too, seems counter intuitive - we want levelling up, and business development in areas of the country where people currently fly to their 2nd home.

The 'world' is never going to cooperate to stop global warming, too much money depends on it, world leaders generally just use things like this as psychological leverage, the media obviously are complicit because they want to scaremonger.

I'm not saying global warming isn't real, I just don't think it will take a higher priority than gaining power and wealth. So for once I agree with Greta the great.

Well when you outsource all of your production to other countries, it makes it really easy to blame them for their emissions while ignoring your own rabbid consumerism.

Shipping is in international waters so that’s not us either right?

I wonder if the politicians, especially Biden, Putin, and Jinping, would listen to her if she was just as passionate about world peace as she is about the envirnoment. Escpecially the effect of THEIR nukes and chemical weapons on the environment and she should tell them that their children and future generations won't have much of a future, civilisation and planet left
It's getting them to see sense and actualy think about the consequences that's the problem.

.... people in the UK seem to think we are world leaders on the environment whereas the reality is quite different.
Keir needs to remind people why they are shivering in their homes, at the prospect of the electricity bill

subsequently clocked this -so 33% of uk carbon consumption is imported & doesn't seem to be in net-zero
china deserves some sympathy.

looks liked the eu have a

On 14 July 2021, the Commission adopted a proposal for a new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism which will put a carbon price on imports of a targeted selection of products so that ambitious climate action in Europe does not lead to ‘carbon leakage’

initially doesn't seem to apply to iphones , just CEMENT IRON & STEEL ALUMINIUM FERTILISER *ELECTRICITY*

china deserves some sympathy.
thats as a percentage of imports vs domestic co2 emissions though.

china doesn't import all that much surely? so as a percentage they would be far lower

chinas negative cos it's a net exporter.
do they really deserve sympathy ? china got rich and more technologically advanced because it's an exporter

Yeah, they can get into that position by not giving a **** about the environment - and our corporations and businesses are also complicit in that by not really giving a **** about the environment whilst greenwashing/gaslighting the western public about how great and socially aware they are.

If China stopped burning coal, oil or gas then businesses would just go through a country that does. The only way they'd have an incentive to stop is if burning carbonaceous fuels wasn't cheaper than cleaner alternatives.

Removing all subsidies from the oil & gas industry and expanding subsidies for electric/hydrogen vehicles, decentralising the electric grid with batteries/renewables, nuclear power etc is I think the most action that we can take.

Our governments and businesses not only didn't give a crap about the environment they also didn't give a crap about domestic industry/workforce and keeping skills alive in this country, so they outsourced everything to China for greater shareholder returns.

We still don't really give a crap as we simply throw all our waste on other countries and count that towards our recycling %. Laughable, really, how we behave. And it won't change whilst it would cost more money to do behave responsibly.
