Greta Thunberg

She and her ilk are wrong. For all of the planet's woes, there is one root cause. Too many humans, wanting too much stuff.
When the 'Politian's' start to work on this, instead of jumping on the nearest bandwagon as it passes, I, for one, will have much more faith in 'our' future.

The politicians are obsessed with growth. I have never quite been sure why. I swear this is the main reason they all seem to want immigrants, despite what they say.

I have always wondered whether it is something really simple like they need growth to fund their ever expanding activities.

the climates never been stable, we were exiting an ice age according to schools in the 80s and 90s

Yes but it's been unstable over periods of millions of years, not decades. And when it is unstable, people die.

The last really big instability, when a volcano in Siberia pumped out CO2 and changed the weather, it killed 90% of all species. But, thing is, it did it over 50,000 years. We are doing the same but thousands of times faster and we aren't slowing down. Oh, and it took a few million years to recover, and that's a long time for Trump to spend in a bunker. At least he can afford one. Your children can't.

because without growth and without a lot of people at the bottom of the pyramid the system collapses .
the environment needs us to control ourselves.
the capitalism that we have needs growth.

because we as a population only care about today then there is only one winner.

also our pensions and NHS. without continual growth and young healthy people to pay in there isn't enough money to support the older people taking out. those younger people eventually get older and then more people start claiming / more likely to use the service so you need even more paying in.

maybe we need some sort of forced culling once we hit a certain age Logan's run style

everyone gets to retire at 60 but then take lethal injection at 70

(not serious but that would allow / cause the population to decline and the economy to survive at least in the short term)

As is common in Star Trek, where they deal with social issues, this very subject was covered in a episode from 1991:

thankfully not life or death but in real life my work has a similar policy...... we get 9 years and then that is it , we are got rid off.... and I am currently in my 9th year.
of course this is real life and as in real life a very small number of people at the top are allowed to step out of the 9 year rule!.
in theory it is to continually bring in new blood and new ideas , and the brain drain is meant to be solved by continually training the new people.

as it's real life it only somewhat works and there is a lot of reinventing the wheel... and I believe it boils down to money and allowing them to not have to pay people as much.

but to go a little more back on topic.... we do have solar panels and a policy for reducing our environmental impact so Greta should like that.

What percentage of the atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide?
0.04%. Please tell me you don't think that because the percentage is small, it doesn't matter. You're not that dense, right?

This is the data that matters :

More CO2 emissions = more CO2 in the atmosphere.

More CO2 in the atmosphere = More temperature increases

Modern CO2 levels are really alarmingly high and accelerating far faster, and beyond any time in the last million years :

That our emission of greenhouse gases since the industrial revolution is warming the planer way beyond normal natural processes is not up for debate, and hasn't been for a loong time.

Because its all a pyramid scheme. And yes, thats exactly why they aren't really trying to stop it. The native birth rate in most of the first world is plummeting. We aren't replacing those that are dying. The only way to fix this is to get people to have more children which is easier said than done and would require a complete change to almost every aspect of society...or we let more people from poorer countries in. That comes with its own issues but its an immediate fix albeit with no real concern for the issues it creates in the future.

In a capitalist society you need infinite growth from finite resources. And its not ever expanding activities per se, its the increasing cost of maintaining a society. Its the increasing cost of taking care of a country. Its the ever increasing age of the population who need more and more expensive care. People have paid their pittance into the tax pot over their life time (40 years of working) and then expect to be taken care of for the next 20-30 years at vast expense as they bleed the country dry through ill health and care requirements.

The whole system is built on the idea that every generation will be larger than the last which will fill that black hole where all the money goes. As long as more people are kicking into the pot to support a small older generation it kind of works. Invert that and its a disaster. Add the fact that the older generation are now more wealthy than their children will ever hope to be in a lot of cases and you have a dwindling younger generation who are going to head towards retirement with far far less of a safety net than their parents whose generation is already unsustainable.

Luckily though, as the population ages and the ageing population grows, their voting behaviour will dictate policy more and more so it should in theory just accelerating the complete ******* of the country as they vote for policies to take care of themselves at the expense of the young. Something we have already seen for years at this point and is only going to get worse.

What happens when it hits 0.02?

and the faster plants and trees grow.

didn;'t they regreen loads of the sahrara desert already, that'lll sure help a bit

The earth is at 423.05 ppm

Most experts agree that 1,500 ppm is the maximum CO2 level for maximum plant growth, although any CO2 level between 1,000ppm and 1,500ppm will produce greatly improved results
a long way to go yet, 2000ppm it starts to be toxic to plants and trees...
they are essentially on a starvation diet

Nature will equalise it just takes time, we should worry if it gets to 1000ppm

by time it's near 800-1000pm it will be 100 years in the future at current rates, clean energy will naturally have taken over by then anyway

Fusion energy probably won't even take 50 years, all the 2030 targets are absolute nonsense, they should be more like 2050 or 2060 targets

You have to stick to the climate crisis memo!!!!! :)

emissions are increasing, it wont hit 0.02 in a long rime. Even if we stopped all CO2 output instantly the elevated CO2 will be in the atmosphere for a long time. This is the critical issue - there is no natural quick solution. All we can do is moderate how catastrophic the impacts ate and rey and save a few billion lives.
