Grow your own 2013

Has anyone actually harvested any of their main tomatoes yet? I am still waiting for my first tomato to become fully ripe. I have plenty of cherry tomatoes. But I have so far had nothing from my six main plants.

I was thinking mine were not going to do anything this year due to late planting in April but nope, got plenty of flowers now and a few 10p sized tommies starting to show.

Yeah, I've had 3 beef tomatoes (from 1 plant), and 5 or 6 main tomatoes (from 3 plants). Plenty of cherry toms.

That's pretty cool!

Tomatoes are finally started to ripen. Harvested around 5lbs so far. Made two batches of tomato soup. Added my shallots and carrots! Lovely!

hey,

What a great thread.

Can someone advise on what i can plant during October/November, i have just cleared out the garden and have some spare space.

Can you use any kind of tomato for tomato soup? Got loads in the fridge that are going to end up getting wasted as everyone is sick of them now.

I've not been over to the allotment for about 3 weeks, due to the darker evenings, bad weather and being away at weekends. I'm off over there tomorrow morning to do some autumnal tidying, I'm a bit fearful of what state it's going to be in :(

On a positive, hopefully my pumpkins and squash will be ripe and ready to harvest, and the beans I left for seed should be good to pick. I've also run out of garlic at home so I'll have to bring some of that back.

I'm also expecting it to be ankle high with weeds, which I'm not so thrilled at having to deal with...

Excellent, i'll give that a try tomorrow. Thanks.

Did you give it a go? How was it?

How shameful was the allotment?

How was everyone's courgettes and sweetcorn this year?

My courgettes started really well but then stopped. Still get a few now and then, but not as much as last year.

My sweetcorn had loads of cobs but very little corn inside despite me giving them a shake over the summer to pollinate them.

They're my two crops that I've been really disappointed with, everything else has been brilliant.

Put in some onions and garlic in the container ready for next year. Good crop of garlic this year but onions haven't really lasted once taken out.

Strawberries finally slowed down - don't think I've ever had such a good crop from so few plants. Keep meaning to pot some runners from the nicer fruiting plants.

Also have to get my new patch ready for next year - some really impressive fruit/veg on here, very inspiring, good job!

Courgettes were very productive as usual!

In fact I have just taken them out tonight. Harvested the last of them and chopped the steam at ground level.

Dug the soil over quickly and got my green manure seeds out from last year. They were infested with little bugs. Where do they even come from? They have been stored in a cool dry place for a year in a paper bag indoors. Sowed them anyway and we'll see what happens.

Not half as bad as I'd feared, aside from having to stamp down a few nettles to get into my shed. Brought home a decent haul of squash and two good sized pumpkins. I'd missed one head of broccoli that'd flowered but there were another two ready to go. A decent amount of late tomatoes and some bright red jalelpenos in the greenhouse. Plus the sweet pepper plants are looking the best they have all season despite not bing watered - they must like that

I need to do a fair bit of work in prep for next spring, and get onions & garlic sown. I'm going to have a burn next month so can do a fair bit of clearing now and make a nice bonfire.

Courgettes were good for me, not mega but they kept us going. I noticed a slowdown too, maybe because there was sugh a drought.

Sweetcorn was excellent though. Have you tried using your hands to pollonate instead of just shaking them? When the silks are out, run your hads over the heads and then over the silks, that way you cad tranfer more pollen.

Are you drying them enough? They need quite tight necks to store well, tiy should dry them until the necks have closed right up and the skins rattle. Also, seed onions will store better than those from sets. I do overwintered sets to use during the summer & autumn and onions from seed to store more long term.

Haven't tried that, might be worth trying next year.
