Growing Chillies

I bought a chili plant in June. Stuck it in some compost and put it in a pot in the garden. Chillies have started coming out.

:D

Same. Well, jalapeños actually. I have a few on a windowsill, some outside in direct sunlight and some in a green house, as a sort of experiment to see how much changing their conditions affects them. They all look the same and are flowering :p

Once a month I just dump some chicken fertiliser into the pot and that is it.

My old system admin used to use abattoir pigs blood - get a pail over each row of chillis planted out in the garden.

He thought that it gave the best taste being 100% natural. Which I can believe although the species he grew would fit into the summer season we have here.

One of my jal plants is coming on amazingly well, such green leaves and lots of shoots for buds coming out of it is a thrill for me. The only thing i am worried about is the weird dark purple bits on the stems of my jal plants. Is this normal or should i be worried?

The stems have dark lines on them, later these will also have a matt light brown too as the stems start to become woody.

Ah k, ta for reassurance nickk. :)

Btw can we get a update off anyone who hasnt posted pics in about a couple of weeks, im dying to see how ur all getting along. Will try to get new pics myself up within the week. :)

Thanks for your replies earlier guys, seems I wasn't pollinating them properly. Been away for 3 days and about 5 have now started to grow properly :D

I have loads of flowers on mine now butt no chillies! I put them outside regularly and was hoping the insects would pollinate them, but it would appear not - whats the best way for me to do it?

Pics in a min.

Actually looking at them, they are now growing a chilli! My first one!! :D:cool:

Flick the flowers a bunch of times to pollinate em. Or shake the branches with flowers on a bit. Bees wont probably pollinate them as i hear they usually pollinate the ones the flowers they know of. If yours arnt there all the time outside then they probs ignore em.

They look nice plants. What are they, jalapenos?

Cheers dude, flicked them, shook the branches and and used a pen lid to catch some pollen and spread it about. Hopefully soon I'll have more than I know what to do with!

I'm unsure of the variety - they came from a packet that just said "hot peppers" and grew some that were bushy like the ones in the pic, and some that were much taller and less bushy. I moved a few weeks ago and only had room for the 3 bushy ones you see, so I have no idea what type they are. I'm sure I'll like them anyway!

Have been enjoying my chilli's, slicing them and putting them on top of pizza's for a bit more of a kick or in chilli con carne mmm. have cheat a bit, having bought my plants already half grown, there in my greenhouse just now, getting lots of fruits just now.
Going to try making the cheese chilli bread tomorrow and will let you guys know how I get on as well as posting some pictures. Currently gworing apache and cheynee(Spelling?). Got two different tomatoe types on the go as well. Planning on growing some carrots, potatoes and garlic soon as well.

Got this small bag of hot chillies these small 1.5" green things from Asda today. Stuck some on some pizza tonite and omg there so hot my mouth was burning.

Anyone got these before, all it said is hot chillies but didnt say what they were exactly. Would like to put a name to them if possible. Might harvest the seed and attempt a grow but duno cos there so frelling hot lol. Nice tho but hot hehe.

Think the ones from asda were birds eye chilli, green ones. Hot as hell on the pizza last night but had one on its own not cooked and was managable. :)

And out of sheer curiosity why are you growing basil?

You can go to Asda and buy a fresh basil in the pot (check the expiry date which will tell you how healthy the plant is) for about 78p. Then when you get home plant in a bigger pot so roots will grow and cut whatever you need. Then they will regrow.

Doing this with Basil, Mint, Parsley and all other herbs in the pot that Asda sells. Best one was the Mint. Paid 50p and have had that plant growing on my kitchen windowshelf for about the last 3 months!!!!!!!

Its easyer to just buy a few packets of seeds which will last a few years and plant as much as you like. They grow like weeds its not hard.

i never realised that chillis didnt like being in loads of water, im so glad i read this thread

i only have 1 very small window available so i ahve a box that is maybe 12" accross an 4" wide then 6" deep it has 1 largish 10" chilli plant and from morrisons chillis i put about 30seeds from the packet chillis in this box an they have all sprouted ill get pics when i get hom frmo work ill try to replant it all this weekend with this pearlite stuff

Just noticed this thread and wow theres some bigguns in here :D .

My baby chilli's -

I'm growing tobasco and Anaheim.

I've had them since January when they were little seeds, I originally bought them as a start kit from amazon with 5 different types of seeds, out 25 seeds these are the only 2 that survived! Since re potting with some decent soil and moving them to our conservatory (nice and hot) They have sprung up!

Not the same as growing your own but i found Dorset Naga in Tesco on Sunday, going to thinly slice them and put them on Pizza for my tea. On the pack it said produce of Bedfordshire a quick look on the net shows a pick your own chilli farm there
