Growing Chillies

I haven't germinated the seeds yet, I'm slacking. I'm off to the garden centre to get some soil, as the propagator with no soil is a bit hot and the heat would be direct.

Easily solved - put a plate upside down - raises the seeds off the bottom of the propagator :D

That's why my initial naga seedling photos seemed a little bumped up.

Would now not be the best time to buy Chilli seeds? My brother is a chilliaholic and its his birthday ina few weeks, a few of these ready for next summer could be something really cool for him, as I know he'd be really up for this kinda thing! :)

This depends on the type of chilli and the conditions it's grown in.

If you're growing them in the UK without additional lighting it can take longer. Chillis love long hours of sunlight and a good 8 hours of snooze time in the dark.

My Jalapenos were sown in Jan and are full of fruit right now. My Nagas are just about starting to flower but were sown at the same time as the Jalapenos. Both have had the benefit of a 400W lamp and being kept warm but the Nagas grow slower and can be as long as 5-6 months before the first harvest.

Excellent. You don't have to use pedigree seeds; if you like what you get at the supermarkets then you can eat the chilli and use the seeds for more :D

Just couple of points:
1. in the top photo the soil looks too moist (almost water logged). Careful with this otherwise you'll get a spread of mould and the roots can rot. Chilli plants like their soil well draining so you may want to mix the compost with pearlite and vermiculite which are easily available at garden centres.

2. I would look at potting them asap rather than using a single bed of soil. The roots will quickly spread and intertwine.

will ease off a bit with the water :) when its sunny the soil drys out really quickly so i may have been a bit to over cautious.

Generally - if something's wrong they wilt. It just takes a while to used to exactly what that 'something' is. Given some good light they'll grow straight up towards it - so it's worth rotating the tray/pots if you have them by a window and they're bending towards it. After a while that bend will stay and then the plant is a pain as it will fall over easily when it's got chillis on.. especially when it's drunk all the water giving it ballast to stand upright :D

Just got to wait a few hours or more and see what the temp is.

can't wait to make some chilli sauce :)

Wardrobe is best so I may transfer the plants into that when they are potted.

Right I see, thanks, tbh I'm not that up with Chilli's, but I know he is, he'll eat hot ones but I don't wanna get anything TOO hot :D

Ideally I'd be looking for something that could come to fruit by the end of the summer from early May, but I appreciate that might not be the best time to set this kind of thing up, they'll have ample natural light either from a windowsill or in his mini-greenhousey-box type thing in the back garden!

Sadly he doesn't/won't have the lamp etc.. so any good summer growing chillis that might suit him well?

Cheers :)

Sounds like something quick growing to fit in with our 'short' summer. They need to be ready to flower/fruit when we get some sun!

I'm not sure on varieties and how fast they grow either but I know japalenos seem to be quick. Best thing would be to ask on the Chilli Galore forums.

it's still hitting 29-30degrees, is this to hot. I lost the sheet with the info on it.

Just found a site saying 28-32 is the best temp.

Ohh look what turned up to day.

One should be blue and on red. But American plugs on them and I haven't got any spare plugs at the moment to swap them over. rated 110-240v so It's a simple cut and swap job.

How long do the seedlings take to germinate?

I put them in a plastic tub with wet cotton wool in my bedroom about 5 days ago and so far nothing.

What kind of moisture content and temps are needed for germination? The room temp is a bout 22*C which should mean the seeds are the same.

Do you know the type?

Naga/Bonnets/Bhut etc take can take 6+ weeks and are very demanding about temps (well about everything!). I had a few that took ages and appeared after I thought they'd died!

couple of my plants are now getting their second sets of leaves :)

will repot them soon

If they're in their own pots already, I'd wait and just leave them to become pot bound first.

My current problem is that the Naga's are looking at bit unhappy at the moment. I think this is down to the temps getting to cold at night (turned the heating off and I have a window open in the bedroom) and they're tall enough at the moment they're getting too close to the lamp. Also I think they had to get used to being repotted too (which explains the growth).

The Jalapenos are going great guns - lots of peppers and flowers.

They were some standard cayenne pepper seeds that were cheap in the local supermarket. Still no sign of anything.

I keep the cotton wool most and it should all be at room temp.

Been 2.5 weeks now.....
