GT200 GTX280/260 "official specs"

Oh dear, it's going to be a festival of price gouging!

"If the information we were told is correct, then Nvidia is having some problems ramping up the production of the GT200 series and this sounds all too familiar when it comes to new Nvidia products.

We’ve heard that even large distributors have a hard time getting more than a handful of cards and that is only if they place large orders of products that Nvidia’s partners have overstock of.

This isn’t the first time this has happened when it comes to Nvidia products and we’re not sure if it’s a deliberate scam to push up prices of these highly sought after cards. With the additional requirements of the distributors having to buy additional cards to get their hands on the new fast cards, we’re really starting to wonder what kind of games Nvidia is playing.

So in other words, if you want one of these new cards when they launch, if you see one for sale, get it, as you won’t get a second chance. "

Just to be clear Nvidia will be in trouble

They will have the fastest GPU at £400 which wont mean squat.

The 4870xt or 4850pro will give fantastic bang for the buck performance which nvidia wont have an answer to in the only price points that matter.

Profits arent made in the £300+ card bracket, they are made in in the £80 - £200 bracket and OEM add ins

man I really want this card (GTX280) next week but I've just been working my monies out and can only spare £450, not a penny over, has there been any talk about pricing yet ?, you guys think it'll be that cheap ?

If you compare to 9800GX2, the announced price before launch was $600 and the GTX 280 is $650

At launch you could find the GX2 for around 400 so you should find the GTX280 for around £430.

What a stupid price for a graphics card, and sadly Im thinking of buying one :D

He says their going to be barely faster. hmmm

GeForce 8800 GTX

core 575MHz
Shaders 1350MHz
768MB 1800MHz
384-Bit Memory Interface
128 Stream Processors

GTX 260

core 575mhz
896mb 1000mhz
Shaders 1242mhz
448-bit Memory Interface
192 Stream Processors

Probably has more ROPS and Texturing units as well, but are those really going to make it blow old G80 out of the water like everyones expecting, or is everyone still expecting the usual, about 10-15fps more in this one, only about 5-6 more in this one....

You got the ram wrong in that comparison

Another review : http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/NVIDIA_GeForce_GTX_280_Preview/5872.html

It wins 3/4 tests against the 9800GX2 but gets spanked in crysis. What seems clear is if you are gaming above 1920x1200 then the G200 definitely makes sense.

"Apparently preliminary testing did not show any jaw-dropping results. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 can be considered as somewhat of a 're-work' of the GeForce 9800 GX2 into a single core package with faster processing capability and more bandwidth.

There is not much performance boost for older games, but for DirectX 10 games like World in Conflict, there is a more noticable improvement over the GeForce 9800 GX2. Not only DirectX 10 titles get a boost when you pick the GeForce GTX 280 over the GeForce 9800 GX2, using the former is more advantageous when you move up to a very high resolution of 2560 x 1600, a resolution found on 30-inch LCDs.

A point to note is abnormal performance in Crysis. We've tried re-benching the GeForce GTX 280 a few times but were greeted with the same results. However during benching, we did notice periodic stutters which were not present while benching the older GeForce 9800 GX2 cards. We are looking into this issue.

We are in the midst of testing Crysis on High settings (and with AA), as well as AA/AF on the other games. Stay tuned, as we work hard to bring you more results from the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1GB."

Can't see the point in these, the GX2 is 2x GTS's downclocked to GT speeds, so you may as well buy 2x £100 GT's and slap em in SLi, or 2x GTS's and slap em in SLi, yer saving a fortune, and getting the same peformance just about, as theres only going to be the odd game that doesn't support SLi, so i can't see many worrying about that, not if they gona save around £200.
In my experience nvidia motherboards run like the brown stuff compared to intel. That is why I would be tempted by 9800GX2

yeah i was gona say, if you had an SLi board etc..., but you can even get the GX2 which doesn't need an SLi baord, which is also going to be far cheaper.

Indeed, I game at 1920x1200 and I'm tempted by the GX2 over a GTX280. If I had a 30" monitor then definitely go for the GTX280 for the extra ram size and bus width.

I did try going 8800GT SLI but the 7 series nforce board felt nasty compared to my Intel X38 board.

The NDA lift tomorrow is just for 2x0GTX yes? So we wont see 4870 vs gt200 tomorrow?

It will be a brave man that buys the GT200 before seeing the 4870 numbers, especially as it is rumoured to have 800 shaders.

TBH by those benchies the GTX280 doesn't look that exciting imo.

15846 06 marks with a 3ghz Quad

You need to ignore 3dmark06 from now on IMHO, it was crazily cpu bound in the end and is not a good gauge of current or next gen graphics card performance*.

I must say the idea in vantage of having the 4 presets is a good one, shame it looks like turd even on the xtreme preset.

*Unless running 1920x1200+ with 4xaa
