GTA 5 - Poor SLI Scaling

I'm sure I uninstalled Rivatuner and the usage was just the same (Afterburner shows GPU usage without Rivatuner).

Could someone else confirm it's not Rivatuner causing this? I'm 99% sure it's the driver or the game at fault.

That latter. I can try uninstalling it but all my other games work fine - not that i play many others but they have all worked fine

Mines working pretty good (i think).

G-Sync on 4k 60hz AA off everything else maxed apart from grass is on very high and shadows on soft

Working great with 980SLi here, ive not noticed any issues with the exception of screen tearing inside buildings

I also have Afterburner on the logitech G19 screen with Rivatuner in the background.

Admittedly im only on 1920x1080 but everything is on Max except the following

MSAA 2x
TXAA On
Reflection MSAA 2x
Nvidia PCSS Shadows

All default settings in Geforce experience.

I have limited my FPS to 119 in rivatuner

The FPS don't seem too far off.

If you want to see better scaling, then maybe enable MSAA 2x, but obviously you may take an FPS hit. You may just be seeing the limits of the API.

What does that mean? 'limits of the API'

GPUZ I can see outputs a file but appears to be only for 1 gpu, do you have to output to multiple files to record stats from multiple gpus? You can log to file with MSI afterburner so I may aswell just use that.

I definitely feel like this is a more CPU than GPU intensive game. Maybe if you run in 1440p and loads of AA or 4k it will use more gpu power but the majority of settings probably require a better cpu (than my i5 760)

That said, its still a good looking and fun game. A couple of shots, one looking quite nice and one of my car that's rather bust up just before I got wasted

Are right, so basically requires more CPU because of the bigger world and more stuff going on. As opposed to say Crysis 3 where the graphics are better but its a linear game

Unfortunately, I'm sinking below 60 regularly and averaging around 70.

There's definitely something not right, I just can't think what it is.

Enhanced distance scaling in Advanced Settings puts quite some stress on the CPU/API. IF the GPU usage goes up once you increase graphical settings (including AA), then SLI scales just fine. You can't have faster frame rates at lower settings due to CPU/API bottleneck. Perhaps nvidia may multithread the driver some more, but you can only go so far at the moment.

Basically Direct X 11 can only handle so many draw calls which is what the CPU will feed to the GPU to draw that fantastic looking world around you. Cannot remember the exact number however this game pushes past the stated draw calls direct X 11 is supposed to be able to handle thus pushing CPUs harder than other games.

So for example when driving fast through the city you may see those FPS drop as your making it call for a lot more draws as vehicles and people and textures come into distance faster. i used to see my FPS drop from my 60FPS lock down to 50 or lowest ive seen 45FPS because of this. However while this was happening my GPU sat at a 80% ish usage but my cpu was around 70,80,90 % usage on the the four cores.

This is very likely the API bottleneck. obviously more optimisation and such could improve this but so far IMO this game is quite well optimized for a pc release especially GTA too.

edit -
forgot that example was on the old AMD omega 14.12 drivers. Not the beta ones which has improved things substantially. So some driver optimization improved this too.

I found that with 290X Crossfire. At 1440p I might as well run a single card at 90%, rather than the pair ~45%.

I've upped the resolution to 3K(vsr) and turned MSAA on to 2x to give the pair a workout.

It's not Rivatuner. I uninstalled it and same results.
