GTA V

Quite torn on whether to get this from R* direct or through Steam. Am I correct in thinking if I get it from R* I won't be able to play with my friends on Steam? Or can I get around it by adding it as a 'non Steam game'?

Would there be any real advantage NOT getting through Steam? I've heard some people have performance drops with regards to the Steam overlay etc.

Advantage is that it might be cheaper. I think that rockstar social club will handle multiplayer independently from steam, though things might be easier on the steam version through steam overlay. I doubt they would segregate the steam users and non steam users for MP either.

So you're saying it will be exactly like DayZ? (double negative  - sorry </grammar_nazi>)

I'm sure it'll be a fine game. But I'm not interested in another piece of bloatware so it looks like bargain bin Steam for ~£10 in a year or two's time it is ;)

TBH out of all the extra launchers and other gubbiny crap that come with some games, R* social club is fairly tame.

It's part of GTA IV and all it does is launch when I click play in steam and then close when I click it's play button. It's similar to the launchers of Skyrim, fallout, w3 etc etc.

And in 2 years time when it is £10 I severly doubt that the "bloatware" will be gone.

Seems a lot of people would rather pay the £40 via Steam for the ease of use.

Do the Steam keys get released for pre-load first or is it just bc people would rather use the Steam interface for games?

I'm getting the steam version (once I know the port is good) due to the convenience of having all my games in one place.

I tend to forget about games that aren't on steam. I only remembered that I owned star citizen when I was clearing out my HDD.

I caved and bought from GMG using the 23% off code. The way I see it is, RSC will need to be installed anyway so the only advantage to having the key on Steam is so that the game is part of your overall games library. If anything, it running through Steam could cause additional overhead (albeit unlikely).

It will work the same as GTA IV works on steam, everything will be run through R*, just that it sits in your Steam Library.

If you have a steam key, it will launch through steam.
If not, it will be a short cut that launches the game.

This is how GTA IV works and I highly doubt it will be anything different this time around. You'll use your R* account to login and away you go.

Having the game on steam or having the game added to your steam library will be exactly the same.

Correct. It says so in the Steam requirements:

Additional Notes: Other requirements: Installation and online play requires log-in to Rockstar Games Social Club (13+) network; internet connection required for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification; software installations required including Rockstar Games Social Club platform

So people want to pay £40, to play a game through steam for "The ease of it"

Which will involve clicking steam, then the game, so the game launcher can be launched by steam, so you can launch the game? :p

While the RGSC version you just play by clicking the game, it loads RGSC, click play, play game.

Simples and saved a tenner!

Bugger told myself I wouldn't do it, told myself not to pre order.

Believed it until today when I saw that price.

Bought it from GMG.

FFS I am so disappointed in myself but still a 5 star getaway will see me right! Roll on March 24th then. :D:D:D

With Steam I can uninstall and reinstall the game whenever I want, also it auto updates the game in the background. I'm not sure if Social Club does that, but that's the appeal with Steam.

I am giving away the STEAM key for San Andreas if anyone wants it. First to confirm their want here gets it!

The mark of a true gamer? :P

Can't you add a non-steam game to steam anyway?

Yes, I had HL2 masked as Notepad.exe before it officially launched for trololol :p

Oh yes I will take GTA SA anyday :P, thx man

I keep saying Max Payne 3 is a good benchmark for the sort of performance you'll get in GTA V.

Obviously the games are different (sandbox vs corridor) but they do use the same graphics engine.

Anyway, I installed Max Payne again to have a little play around with at 4k UHD (3840x2160) and the game engine tells you exactly how much memory you need.

DX11, everything maxed out, UHD and with MSAA 8x it needs nearly 6GB v-ram!*

It did run with MSAA 4x but performance suffered a bit.

To get the game running comfortably I had to knock MSAA down to 2x.

Specs:

i7 5930k @ 4.4Ghz
16 GB DDR4 @ 3000mhz
AMD 295x2 and 290x crossfire (3 GPUs)
Windows 8.1

*it actually showed in the video options as 17000mb+ but that's because of the v-ram mirroring that crossfire uses.

Whilst the engine may be the same, the actual performance of the game will be very different I feel.

I only have a 780 GTX so 3GB of VRAM and 8GB of RAM. I reckon I'll be lucky to be able to run the game at medium.

It's a game built for (very) old consoles tarted up for only slightly more powerful "next-gen" consoles and the PC to make a load of extra sales...

Granted they seem to have gone a lot further with it than the average developer does but I will be absolutely amazed if it takes the kind of power discussed to get good results on max settings

I find Steam to be quite a handy way of playing GTA IV when it comes to modding the game and playing LCPD:FR. If as can sometimes happen, a mod or script screws up your install, with Steam its a doddle to just copy a backup of the game back into the Steam folder or use the "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" option to reverse any changes you've made. The same will apply to GTA V once the modding community get their teeth into it and the LCPD:FR team release a GTA V version. :)

That and also for some reason when I download games via Steam it always manages to make full use of my D/L connection and max it out utterly. Previous digital downloads I've tried of games from elsewhere haven't managed that for some reason. It's no biggy though.
