GTA4 Delayed until Q2 2008!

Analyst Michael Pachter believes Rockstar has delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto IV because it is struggling with development on the PlayStation 3, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.

And the Xbox 360 version of the game has suffered at least a six month delay as a result, due to contractual obligations that will have prevented the publisher from releasing the game first on Microsoft's machine, says the analyst.

"We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognise how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," said Pachter.

"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favour competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version," he added.

This failure to recognise development problems could dent investor confidence in the publisher, even after it has taken steps to improve the green light process for software development.

"Take-Two management stumbled badly for the first time during their tenure," commented Pachter.

"While the delay of GTA IV was clearly not the fault of new management, we believe that it should have been better understood several months ago, and should have been communicated to investors much earlier than today.

"The company has begun an initiative to improve the green light process for new projects, but given the delays of Manhunt and GTA, its process for monitoring projects under development appears to be a failure," he said.

Don't shoot the messenger, its not my opinion, PS3 fans back off and chill out. :p

But cheers Sony, great console you've got there!

;)

If that is true then i am very language! off, i can accept the delay if we were going to get an unpolished game but if its been delayed for 6 months because of the crappy ps3 then thats just plain wrong

Rockstar did say it was 3 weeks behind, i dont think 6 months is due to the PS3. That is from an analyst, we all know how well they do with all this nonsense, especially pachter

As PS3 owners we are already familiar with delays for just about every game released in last few months!!!

yeah but thats the ps3's fault.

Lets say hypothetically that MGS 4 became multiplatform and was due out Q1 2008, what if it was then delayed for 6 months because the 360 version wasn't ready? you'd be rightfully ****** off i imagine.

Great, fuel for the 360 fanboys

Without wanting to seem to be favouring one side over another, I think 360 fans are well within their right to be annoyed if the above story is true.

Some more theories doing the rounds.

So what caused this the unexpected delay? Rockstar says it was 'development issues' and its 'level of commitment'. But our nasal hairs are tingling with the smell of cover-up, so we've put our crack team of conspiracy nuts on the case and they’ve come up with what could be (but probably isn’t) the TRUTH.

Theory 1. Rockstar didn’t want GTA IV to be overshadowed by Halo 3. Halo 3 is due on September 25th and had GTA stuck to its original release date, it would have landed a little over 3 weeks later. Although most gamers like to deal with gaming on a minute by minute basis, the fact is that at such an early point in Halo 3’s lifecycle, it should still be going strong. And, even a minor amount of slippage on that release date would have left it treading its massive MJOLNIR armoured boot right on GTA’s turf.

If it was any other game, it wouldn’t mattered one iota in the face of the mighty GTA, but Halo… that’s one big franchise you don’t want to lurk in the shadow of if you can possibly avoid it.

Theory 2. Rockstar is struggling with the PS3’s Cell processor. Just where was GTA IV at this year’s E3? It wasn’t in the Sony stand, oh no. A fact that led many to believe Rockstar was giving Sony the cold shoulder for reasons unknown. Consider also that all early previews of the game were shown running on Xbox 360 consoles and that all screenshots were also taken from 360 builds.

A Rockstar spokesman even alluded to the problems faced when making the game run on the complex Cell processor, stating that the games production was still “a week or two behind”. It’s no secret that the Cell is harder to program for than the Xbox 360’s more familiar architecture, but could it be so nightmarishly complicated that those extra months are needed just to get to grips with it?

Theory 3. GTA IV Wii version now in the making. There’s no money in exclusives any more – multiplatform games are where the real bucks can be made, a fact that Rockstar knows very well and has even worked out a cunning way of squeezing extra cash, to the tune of $50m, just for some poxy downloadable content. But which platform is the top dog of this generation? That’s right, the Wii.

We also know that Rockstar has a firm grasp of how to make Wii games (if not how to get them past classification boards) from early reviews of Manhunt 2. I put it to you that GTA IV is already wrapped up and finished for the PS3 and Xbox 360, but Rockstar wants the extra time to get the surprise, unannounced Wii version off the ground.

Theory 4. Sony bribed Rockstar to delay GTA IV. Sony made a recent deal with Rockstar. As a result, a new mystery franchise was ‘unveiled’. However, the nature of the deal and the agreed sum remain a closely guarded secret. Now, also consider that Microsoft has the upper hand when it comes to GTA IV, thanks to the aforementioned DLC exclusive. Anyone looking to buy a new console in order to play GTA IV has therefore decidedly little incentive to choose a PS3 over an Xbox 360 (from a purely gaming perspective).

Also, the last thing that Sony needs is an even bigger surge in sales of the Xbox 360 this Xmas. Therefore, although pushing both the Xbox 360 and PS3 version sales into 2008 harms both console manufacturers, the damage it does to Microsoft is a little bit higher. This would also give time to quash the idea that the 360 version would be hitting shelves a couple of weeks ahead of the PS3 version.

Theory 5. GTA IV was always going to be late and was only slated for this financial year to keep Take 2 afloat. Our whistle-blowers are treading on dangerous territory here and are even now looking furtively around for unmarked helicopters. But it is fair to say that Take2’s financial past has been a somewhat murky affair, riddled with accusations of shady insider dealings. In fact, just days ago, former Take2 CEO Ryan Brant was convicted of stock-option backdating and was sentenced to five years of probation.

But that was then – this year was set to be a fresh start for the struggling publisher, and new chairman Strauss Zelnick came in to take the reins. So has Take2 really turned over a new leaf? Expert Herb Greenberg (who undoubtedly knows a lot more about this sort of thing than us) thinks not. We have to then wonder if a 2007 release was ever truly possible and that all those who got to see the game first hand have been unwitting pawns in this fiendish plot… Dun Dun Duuun.

Update: It came to our attention that there was yet another sinister, yet worryingly plausible theory that might contain a kernel of truth. Plus we didn't want place so much of the blame on Sony unfairly. Therefore:

Theory 6: Rockstar can't fit the game onto a DVD. Back in May, Official PlayStation Magazine asked Rockstar Creative VP Dan House whether the lack of hard drive and Blu-Ray in the Xbox 360 created limitations. "Yep," he said. "To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet." He went on to say that both platforms "have enormous challenges." The truth? Rockstar hasn't overcome the lack of DVD player and Hard Drive in the Xbox 360. The game was actually secretly begun in development for the PS3 and made extensive use of Blu Ray, but was later ported over to Xbox 360 by agreement with Microsoft, who demanded a simultaneous multiplatform release. The PS3 version is finished. Rockstar just hasn't worked out how to cram the game onto a DVD

I think outta these number 5 could have some truth in it, wouldnt think Rockstar would withold the 360 version and wait for the PS3 if it was going to take an extra 6 months.

I'd be annoyed, sure.. but not because I have a PS3, more because TakeTwo didn't realise until it was too late and continued to fuel the hype with recent trailers etc etc :(

Just seems like you posted a comment that you knew would upset the PS3 owners, and I think the fact TakeTwo aren't allowed to release the 360 version first has fueled your (and many other's) fire towards the PS3 in general.

it has nothing to do with annoying ps3 owners, its to do with one of my most looked forward to games of the year being delayed (possibly) because of the playstation 3.

Keyword being "possibly".

You can't confirm it yet you were quick enough to slam the PS3 because of it ;)

as you'll see i was not "slamming the ps3" i was saying if this is the case then i am very annoyed.

The most plausible reason is that they simply need more time to develop and polish the game. Gee, how about that. :p

thats what im hoping, because its the only valid reason that no-one can complain about. Id much rather than have it released early with stability issues
