GTX 1070 - any takers?

Yeah I think you're right with this. If you plan to re-sell, perhaps when the 1080 Ti is released, you're probably looking at losing the same amount for both cards. The only difference may be that while the 1080Ti wrecks the 1080 in terms of price and performance, the 1070 may sit confidently at it's current positioning, which will reinforce it's resale value compared to the 1080. That's just random estimation though

hmm...you may be right. 1070 seems to be targeted to value for money / sweet 1440p spot audience and if priced right (no more than £400) will be very popular and hold it's value. Whereas 1080 is for people who want latest and greatest, but it's only about 25% better than 1070. 1080 seems to be this weird stop over before you get full fat card. Once 1080ti comes out it will (I think) be around 2x1070 performance in which case nobody will be interested in 1080. Unless 1080ti is singnificantly more expensive e.g. £900, so 1080 would have it's firm place in the product portfolio.

GTX1070 is a no brainer if you have a GTX 980 Ti. Unless your gaming above 4K its going to be fast enough & a free upgrade right now price wise.

Extra 2GB VRam (many PC gamers are already using over 6GB VRam)
Way lower temps
Similar performance within a few % which is unnoticeable in real world useage!

Once GTX1070 is readily available GTX980Ti prices will plunge to sub £300 used & £450 ish new.

rubbish

We may need a new thread soon "which 1070 card are you getting" :)

I may be going for Asus strix this time round. I'm on MSI, they do look cool and are build well (alghough my 970 died after 1.5 years)

Strix has slightly higher boost clock and maybe priced lower looking at 1080s pricing.

Good job cherry picking benchmarks. I may have been wrong with my 60+ FPS assumption, but what you linked is also not accurate. Most benchmarks I've seen have placed it between 50-55 FPS.

Wouldn't be surprised if this guy has Hairworks AA on max, SMAA on max, etc.

when I had my 970sli W3 was around 70fps...it's just badly optimised
on 1070 you should be able to get 80+

35fps in 1440p - settings are messed up for sure

Lets be clear pricing of 1070 and 1080 is a joke. Whoever thinks it is not is either new to the graphics card game, isn't familiar with "monopoly" term or have not analysed previous releases and where they stand in the product portfolio.

There is another thread that I stareted that is discussing pricing of 1080/1070 "£700 for gtx 1080 (aka new 980) - ehmmm..no thank you!"

Basically nvidia released mid tier 1080 and priced it higher than the high end card just because they can. And yes of course its (marginaly) faster than anything else, what did you expect? slower? that's the way it is with the technology these days.

Personally, I will be happy with MSI/Asus anything below £400 not because I think it a fair price but because I come into terms with Nvidia's monopoly and arising from this rip off and disrespectfull practises. If there was a serious competition I would ditch nvidia in the blink of an eye.

The 1080 is not mid range. The 980 wasn't mid range. The 960 was nVidia's mid range card and the 1060 will be this year.

1080 is mid range just as 980 and 970 was and 670 and 680 before that.
It's been discussed on numerous ocassions in the recent past.
Yes it's faster (just) than any available card at the moment but it does NOT make it high end in the card line up.

But most aren't, you can get it for £520, I've seen an aftermarket Gigabyte one for £560 with a much better cooler.

You are completely missing the point.
Do you really want crappy clowns edition 1080 for £520?! I don't.
Decent card e.g. MSI gtx 1080 costs £650. £700 isn't far off.

But that's not the point. Point of the other thread was massive price increase for x70 and x80 cards. E.g. MSI 970 was £280 when released but MSI 1070 wll be most likely £400. That's whooping £120 more. Even worse for 1080, with £220 price increase.

Current product line up:

Low end:
210
710
730

Mid Range:
750Ti
950
960

High End:
970
980
980Ti
Titan

Are you honestly trying to say that anything less than 980 (1080) is a low end card?

As I said it's been discussed somewhere in depth.

x70/x80 are NOT high end cards. A high price tag (this year) does not make them high end. Common misconception.

Again, you are completely ignoring my point. The price is irrelevant. The 570/580 were high end, the 670/680 were high end and so on.

It's like saying a Ferrari 599 isn't a high end car because the Veyron is a little bit quicker, it's ridiculous.

can we stop this ridiculous car analogy. It does not work with graphic cards :)

I'm guessing that you don't have 980ti (high end card), if you did you would probably me more informed on high end front. Ask any 980ti owner if he thinks that 1080 is a high end card and if they want to move on to 1080. I doubt it. Increase in fps is marginal.

Nvidia is very clever in their pricing and marketing.
