Guide for HTPC

Graph Edit

GraphEdit is a visual tool for building and testing filter graphs. It is provided as an executable with the DirectX SDK. With GraphEdit, you can quickly build and test filter graphs to see if they function as you expect. You can even view a filter graph created by an application running in another process.

Just a note:

You can see what codecs MediaPortal is using by launching GraphEdit and then clicking File -> Remote Graph . You will get a window pop up with some text in the box. Select the text and click "OK".

Alternatively, Launch MP Configuration. In "General" un-tick "Launch MP in full screen". Then go to your "Movies" Menu and select "Player" sub menu. Make a note of the codecs you have chosen.

Then Launch MP. You will see that it launch in a window. Play a file. Then load up the codecs that you have selected for that file extension and tick the option "Show in System Tray" in all of them. You will note that when you have MP running and you launch the codec from the programs menu in explorer that it will not show any information and will look as if its not being used! Now play another file in MP. You will see the codecs load up in the system tray that are being used by MP.

If you need to make any adjustments then double click on the codec from the system tray and you will be able to see how the adjustments look in MP. Once you have everything the way you want it. Close MP and open up MP Configuration again. In General tick "launch in fullscreen" and sit back and enjoy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have ticked "show in system tray" the options for FFDshow, AC3 and CoreAVC. These are the only codecs i use and have got installed and i have disabled all other internal codecs that other plays such as KMPlayer and Media Play Classic use.

Now when i play a file in MPC or KMP or MPortal, i can see ffdshow and/or ac3 and/or coreavc load in the system tray so i know they are the only ones being used.

Alternatively you can click inside the window of KMP and MPC and scroll to the "Filters" menu and it will show you what is being used. You can select one and it will launch and you can make any adjustments if necessary.

My HTPC is an old P4 Northwood 3GHz with ATi 9800PRO and Audigy 2. It feeds a 720p TV through VGA. Will it play Bluray if I just stick a Sony DDU-X10S Blu-Ray Reader in fine or not?

Probably not. You would need a Core2Duo E2xxx or a descent AMD at least. There are some HTPC build threads that i've seen where a Q6600 struggles to play disc based bluray material. Many report stuttering and jerky playback. You probably need a at least a E2200/E5200 and a ATi 34xx card i would say to get HD picture and 5.1/7.1 out via spdif.

Could you post a guide on how to do this please?

STEP 1. Install.
STEP 2. Then in the main window click: "Choose Remote". Select Media Centre Remote.
STEP 3: Click "Set up Remote". Untick all of the options
STEP 4. click "Choose Blaster". Select "MCE IR Blaster"
STEP 5: Where it says "Remote Profiles" make sure "Default" is selected. Then press the "Edit" button. and a configuration/remote profile editor window will pop up. You will see a pic of the MCE Remote. Click the "Green Button" on the remote. You'll see that "Window" will be selected from the list of actions. In the "Button Options" plane select "Launch Apllication" in the Type. Then under that it says application. In there browse to MediPortal folder and select MediaPortal.exe. Press ok.
STEP 6: All done and now enjoy.

NAS drives can be a problem if you have more than 1 HTPC as they bandwidth is rubbish. If you get things accessing the NAS at the same time then you will run into problems as they just dont have the bandwidth.

Personally i think getting a 1.5TB drive or 2 and sharing them across the network is a lot better. Just host them on the main PC and let all the others access them. Harwiring them to the router is the best option as i have done with my HTPC

photoshop, had an idea as to why u cant get eventghost working with my configs. Am I right in thinking your antec fusion uses imon software to gain support in mce? If so its totally different to my official MS MCE IR reciever and MS remote.

That might be the reason!!!!

That probably explains it lol :)

I'm just using MPC as the external player inside MP at the moment. At least this way i dont have tofaff on with the codecs and stuff. Would be great if i could use my harmony 1000 with it but cant get MPC to work with it so having to use my keyboard. Its not ideal but it does the job :(

One thing I am curious about is how you changed the background to your skin - was it easy, or are advanced editing skills needed???

Its dead easy :)

Instructions:

Browse to C:/Program Files/MediaPortal/skins/monochrome/media directory. In there is a file named "background". That is the file you have to overwrite or replace.

Note: File must be jpeg and called background (obviously)!

Then delete the monochrome cache in documents and settings...../application data/mediaportal/monochrome directory

I've had a break through!

For those of us who use either Windows Media Player Classic (WMPC) or Windows Media Player Classic Home Cinema (WMPC-HC) within MediaPortal and have been unable to get access to its controls via MCE Remote fear not as I have finally discovered how to do it!!!

This is probably the simplest and easiest way.

The functions we need control over in MediaPortal are: Play, Pause, Stop, Forward, Rewind and Exit.
Right, here’s what you need to do. I use WMPC-HC but it’s the same process for WMPC.

1. Load up WMPC/WMPC-HC and go to options (view -> options or press O)

2. Click the "Keys" menu in the left plane.

3. Click "Play" in the listed keys and scroll across to the row "App Command". Double click in it (in line with the "Play" column) and a menu will drop out. In that menu select "MEDIA_PLAY".

4. Click "Pause" in the listed keys and scroll across to the row "App Command". Double click in it (in line with the "Pause" column) and a menu will drop out. In that menu select "MEDIA_PAUSE".

5. Click "Stop" in the listed keys and scroll across to the row "App Command". Double click in it (in line with the "Stop" column) and a menu will drop out. In that menu select "MEDIA_STOP".

Now for FFD and RWD you have three options: "small", "medium" and "large". These determine how fast you want to FFD/RWD. I personally use "small" but it’s up to which one you want to use.

6. Click "Jump forward (small)" in the listed keys and scroll across to the row "App Command". Double click in it (in line with the "Jump forward (small)" column) and a menu will drop out. In that menu select "MEDIA_FAST_FORWARD".

7. Click "Jump backward (small)" in the listed keys and scroll across to the row "App Command". Double click in it (in line with the "Jump backward (small)" column) and a menu will drop out. In that menu select "MEDIA_REWIND".

Make sure these are the only keys that have text in the “App Command” Columns! If there is any others then remove them!

Now you will be able to Play, Pause, Stop, Forward and Rewind using the media keys on the MCE Remote.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be able to Exit WMPC/WMPC-HC and return to MediaPortal we need an additional program called "LMRemote". Its what I use to map my Green Button on the MCE remote so when I press it loads MediaPortal.

First we need to choose a key to exit the player. I have chosen "B" on my keyboard to exit the player (you can choose which ever key you like).

Look up "Exit" in the keys option of WMPC/WMPC-HC. Make sure under the "Modifier" column you select "None" in the drop down menu. Then in the "Key" column select "B". That’s it. Click Apply.

Now here’s what you do in LMRemote:

Download it from here (its Free): LM Gestion : LM Remote KeyMap for Streamzap, Firefly, Firefly Mini, USB-UIRT, TechnoTrend or MCE PC Remote

1 Install.
2. Then in the main window click: "Choose Remote". Select Media Centre Remote.

3 Click "Set up Remote". Untick all of the options

4 click "Choose Blaster". Select "MCE IR Blaster"

5 Where it says "Remote Profiles" make sure "Default" is selected. Then press the "Edit" button. and a remote profile editor window will pop up. You will see a pic of the MCE Remote. Click the "Green Button" on the remote (It will be highlighted in green). In the "Button Options" select "Launch Application" for Type. Then under that it says “Application”. In there browse to MediaPortal folder and select MediaPortal.exe. Press ok.

6 Click the "Red" button on the remote. In the "Button Actions" select "PressKey" for Type. Then under that it says Virtual Key Code. In there choose "B". Press ok.

Now every time you press the Red button on your MCE Remote, it will close WMPC/WMPC-HC (and when you press the Green Button MediaPortal will load).

I’ve chosen the Red button on my MCE Remote to emulate key “B” but you can choose any key you like.

Now, you will be able to exit WMPC/WMPC-HC and return to MediaPortal.

You should now have complete control over MediaPortal and will not need to use your keyboard anymore.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve managed to integrate it all with my Harmony 1000 remote so now I have COMPLETE control of MediaPortal and Windows Media Player Classic Home Cinema.

The 2nd Screen is just a back up of all the commands i use on my MCE Remote.
The controls on the 1st screenshot are the ones i use plus i have configured some of the hard keys such as the bottom left/right keys to forward/rewind, Chan + launches MediaPortal and Chan - closes WMPC-HC.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tip 1:
You can set up other keys like above for other controls under “Keys” in WMPC/WMPC-HC should you wish to do so. Pretty much any action you want to do is listed in the Keys options.

For Example, if you want to turn on and off subtitles, choose a key and then alter the options in WMPC/WMPC-HC so that the key for “Subtitles on/off” corresponds with that keyboard key you have chosen. Then in LMRemote map a button on the MCE Remote (same procedure as above) to that key.

In essence, what you are doing is mapping keyboard keys to the remote.

You could map every key if you wanted to using LMRemote and configuring the keys in WMPC/WMPC-HC to match. This has the added benefit of using WMPC/WMPC-HC as stand alone in explorer rather than just in MediaPortal but as most of us use it within MediaPortal this shouldn’t be necessary.

Tip 2:
Rather than having profiles and Hotkeys in ATi CCC to change between 60Hz (desktop) and 24Hz (movies) just use WMPC/WMPC-HC to it for you when it launches. There is setting in options where you can tell it to change resolution when the film starts. I’ve set mine to 1920x1080 @ 24Hz. When you close the player it changes the resolution back to what it was.

NOTE:

Don’t map a key that is used by another program or another task, as it will no longer work. If you do need to do this then create a separate profile in LMRemote and map a key to switch between the profiles.

Now i just need to figure out how to change "Videos" to Movies and "TV Shows" to TV Series on the main screen.

Also want it to show 2 rows rather than 5 but im no programmer :(

Got sick of the black and white look of monochrome and came across "black & blue" which is essentially monochrome modded from black and white to black/blue.
This is what it looks like: http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/m...-monochrome-mod-now-available-download-37441/

But black & blue was not to my taste either. So, i went about modding it. Inspired by Mac Aqua theme i went about my way.
This is what i come up with:
