Guild Wars 2

That's *much* less than I expected, but remember NCsoft principally derives revenue from Korea and China which have fairly different Infrastructure costs to the West.

I think ANet is run as a separate operating company with little direct involvement by Korea. I know for sure NCSoft USA was entirely separate. I would imagine NCSoft funded the studio through the development of the original GW, but pretty much leaves them to get on with stuff.

They arent any different. NCsoft is one same company that publishes MMOs across the world. Obviously they have separate divisions for the English speaking world and Asia. Anet is one of the producers that NCsoft have working for them, and the wages of Anet staff are paid by NCsoft.

Anet is NCsoft's biggest and most popular developer, they are going to be supporting and paying them for a very long time.

NCsoft (KRX: 036570) is a South Korea-based online video game company, which has published massively multiplayer online role-playing games including Lineage, Exteel, Guild Wars and Aion.

Also, it isnt from NCsoft's words, but from many of Anet's staff themselves - the server costs for GW are so minimal that they can literally keep the game running forever entirely of box sales, with plenty of cash left over for their wages and PVP tournament prizes. No MMO developer today needs to charge for both box sales and fees to keep their game well supported. MMO's requiring fees was the biggest lie ever told by greedy MMO companies, and too many sheeple believe it so carry on paying the fees on top of paying for the game and any new content in expansions.

they must be getting to the point where they have to get it out of the door to bring money back into the company, and they need to get big big sales to recoup the costs of development.

I thought that but they just seem to be taking a long time to release it to make sure the game is perfect when released, they must have something to keep them going if its taking so long to release.

I just want it out so I can play it! As someone who wasn't really interested in the GW product playing the first game has hooked me and really looking forward to 2. It's a nice change to the wow model standard of most mmo's.

Arenanet support is basic at best compared to other MMO's. Sure they will reset your password for you. But some of the things they will not do compared to other MMO's are:
Recover deleted items
Restore hacked accounts
Recover deleted characters
Any hacking done on your account is always your fault, not theirs..

Basically. your account gets hacked (and thousands have been) and even if it's by an Anet/NCsoft security hole) and 6 years worth of stuff and achievements gets deleted.. Tough.. Start again. I've had a few friends that's happend to and they will not be buying GW2 unless the assistance and protection for existing players is improved.

Thats where they save the money, by chopping out half of what an MMO support team usually does.

Is there any info yet on whether there will be anything similar to presearing in GW2? Would love that

At this point, I would doubt it. However I do remember that quite a while ago, the question was asked by one of the CSM's as to whether a pre-searing type place would be desired. Can't remember the outcome.

To be fair, the tools to do that sort of thing were not (and are still not) built into the GW engine. So leastwise not being able to restore your account is not because they don't want to do it, it's because they can't without a massive roll-back.

It's partially for that reason (and lots of others), that they redesigned the game engine. And yes I've been hacked, and lost quite a bit in the incident.
Since then though I've made most of the losses back (still working on all the Heavy Equip Packs).

I dont think that Turbine or Blizzard restore deleted charaters or items either. This doesnt make their support worse when hardly anyone offers all that.

Guild Wars would have been a lot better off adapting some better security features, particularly the 4-5 digit pin number that you enter on a numeric click pad.

I still have my 6 year old GW account, though I would be major ****ed if it got hacked.

They do restore deleted characters and lost items.

I deleted my original wow character between thc and wrath when I cam back after an 18 month break I made up a "let my brother try the game in my account, must have deleted by mistake blah blah" and they restored it with items, titles and the rest.

Was very impressed by that.

I don't get hacking these days when you can introduce an authenticator and problem solved.

Regardless of server costs - I cannot be the only person having an awkward time with GWs servers, surely?

I have just finished vanquishing a zone in Elona and my average ping is 200ms which is horrible in comparison to pinging 22ms to a wow eu server, it's a night and day difference, especially when interrupting etc.

Has there been anything official regarding the server structure of GW2 anyway? As in - are they making it district based or EU/US servers etc.

Or maybe you simply dont need a ping as low as 22 to play GW?

Anything under 400 is completely fine for GW, even in competitive PVP.

If the ping symbol is green, then you dont have anything to worry about.

There's basically (I believe) at least 2 sets of servers, possibly 3. The US servers are based in (fairly sure it's) Texas, and the Euro servers are based in the UK in Brighton at the NCSoft offices there.

My ping is between 31ms and 100ms generally (using Virgin)
