I can't even finish my personal story because I can't get into Orr in the first place. The WP's are always contested and everytime I've been in a group of people to do the events etc we get wiped or don't complete in time because there's not enough involved.

I'd recommend actually getting your last 2 levels in Frostgorge Sound as a lot easier to get about. Plus there's the claw of jormag event which should give you a few drops which could help.
Then head back to Orr and will find it a bit easier

Cheers for the tip but I'm already level 80, have 100% Frostgorge Sound, have some exotics etc...the problem is I can't complete the story with this character due to the reasons listed, not because I'm not strong enough. I can't even reach Orr, let alone complete it. I'm guessing the same goes for a few other players too.

I wonder how far in the WP blocking goes.

If people beyond a certain point aren't blocked it could (in theory) remain locked forever as others will never bother coming to help as it won't effect them.

Your server must be horrible then. I solo'd all of my personal story without a problem (other than the final mission as it requires a group + entrance was bugged for a week) and Orr has plenty of people in it.

I think the longevity is fine, Anet recently said that they plan to have monthly updates to the game, the next being on the 15th November.

Server is fine I have completed Orr on 3 toons now without a issue.

Hit 80 (at last) and got a full yellow (whatever it's called) set of gear for about a gold. As someone said Orr becomes manageable at 80 with decent gear, I can kick most things to peices and exploring the zone now.

Is 42k karma gear the "top" level stats? I'm really enjoying hurtling around doing events even though I only have around 45k karma. Also where is the world event vs Zhaitan?

The 42k karma gear is the top stats, along with the exotic crafted stuff and dungeon gear. Due to the karma costs, I would say avoid buying the karma gear as one day you may need the karma if you want to make a legendary. Mixing and matching some crafted with some dungeon runs is an easy way to get the top exotics.

As for Zhaitan, you fight him in the story mode of Arah, the dungeon in Orr.

Whay was the huge dragon fight they showed pre release then?

I imagined that to be Zhaitan.
 
There are several dragons you can fight in the open world, such as Claw of Jormag, and the one in sparkfly fen, Zhaitan isn't one of them though and he is the only Elder Dragon ingame right now.

He is in Frostgorge Sound. If you go to the Earthshake Basin waypoint on the far right side (about half way up the map) of the map and head west from there, not far past the vista you can see if the event is up, it's a multi part event where you have to kill some big crystals that spawn ice type minions, and then the fight against the claw of jormag has a couple stages itself. If you haven't done it before, it's a fun event.

Personally I think I enjoyed The Shatterer and Tequatl more.
