Personally I think the entire CE edition thing is a huge scam - it's just tat, really. Tat with a hyper-inflated price. I can't honestly believe there is anything 'collectible' about a mass-produced art booklet or a few crappy screen-printed t-shirts. The same with the figurines: these are not antique items or items of any special craft, they're mass-produced moulded and over-priced hunks of metal/plastic (hello? Warhammer anyone?). If you're a huge fan of a gaming franchise I think there are many better ways to support the company/community other than parting with £100+ of your hard-earned cash for their 700% profit mark-up. CE editions are a thinly-veiled scam - games developers reaping the advance profits and cashing-in on the hype they have generated in their faithful fanbase. Not to mention that the finished games themselves are normally always disappointing... and who wants to 'collect' a box for a game that died 4 months after release? Poor show.

They hadn't 'run' out of digital copies, they were simply only allowing X amount of copies to be preordered. This was to prevent day one over population problems. So it was a win win situation for both parties really. Players have less populated start zones, and Bioware have more revenue.

Guild Wars didn't die 4 months after release, nor 1 year, nor 2 years, etc etc..
Do I regret getting the CE for Guild Wars 1, or the CE for Factions, or even the CE for Nightfall... in a word NO.
Granted the GW2 CE is a tad more expensive.. I still have no regrets on buying it. Cos GW2 isn't going to die inside 4 months..
I never heard of anyone not being able to purchase it and play before it came out and then post launch, same for CE edition. Unless I can be shown otherwise I think it was just a marketing strat to get people to rush.
I agree, I'm no stranger to CE though, I have bought some in the past but I regard them all as junk, you really get nothing, art (who cares) it gets put on a shelf, maps... you use the ingame one, music? hahaha extract it from the game installer or someone's already uploaded it. In game items that last for an hour/1 day/5 days? then it's GONE. The plush toy? Meh.
However, I would buy CE if the price was right and there was a chance of making money back to make it a better deal than a standard.
I know it wasn't a game but I bought the SC2 Limited edition statue on the premise I assumed it would make money years down the line, Bought for £90 ish at the time, sold for £300 few weeks ago, I assume it would sell more after heart of the swarm and the last expansion and it's already a big compo scene game so, that's my basis.

Slightly wrong on the figurines, everyone is hand made by one of Canada's best toymaking company. I'll post a link later, on my phone right now.
The CE is a rip off in the UK though, in the US its $90 more for all the extra stuff, which isn't as bad. In the UK its basically £90 more for the extras.
USA - $60 SE, $150 CE
UK - £40 SE, £130 CE .....
Australia - $200 for the CE :x

Correction, you mean Publishers not developers.
Considering the developers are the ones creating the in-game items and the art booklets and general development material, I don't think you can pin it all on the publishers. The publisher/developer distinction is sometimes a facile way for the devs (or fans) to hide behind the 'publishers r evil' schtick. Developers want to get paid too.
This is only your opinion. On the fan forums, lots of GW fans are happy with paying for the CE just to support a game they enjoy and help towards keeping it alive.
Look up path of exile pre purchase beta packs, $1000 for a diamond supporter pack and you gwlet a cool shiney glowing mini pet to show for it. Some people can afford it, and buy it to support the game, not because they feel that the content is worth it.

This is less to do with "wanting to buy and support the game" and more to do with people desiring status via in-game items and objects. You can bet that if Blizzard introduced a super-shiny-awesome-unique flying mount for a stupidly exclusive price, lots of people would buy it. Look at how many people forked out a silly amount of money for the standard store mount. Give someone a way of distinguishing their character with a unique or rare status-object and they'll fork over their money no matter what. Some people just have no perspective.

I've been playing GW1 since day 1, and between life and work I just don't have the time to grind all those 50 points.
I'm a developer and publisher marketing actually does the booklets, boxing and promotions. Most of the studios get paid a set amount in milestones and publishing actually earns from the sales. We don't see any royalties of CE, special editions etc.
So yes most of this is publishing/marketing.
Just to add publishing/marketing will gather production work and package it. Sometimes we can twist arms and do artwork for the front cover.

Absolutely no point starting gw1 now. Best bet would either to be, try the beta of gw2 out or at least wait till you get people opinions on it next weekend. The games are going to be different in how they play.
I think being so close to release I personally would not bother. The story lines however are great fun with great characters and it would be good fun to play through it at least once. Due to its age and nature though, particularly in the beginning stages, there are not that many fresh players making it more a single player experience.
Perhaps if you had 1-2 mates who also wanted to run through the game with you to learn the back story that would be better. Also GW2 is set 200? years after the first game so it wont be a direct story continuation.
